  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role was to help facilitate the recruitment process for university placement and gap year interns. This involves screening applications, processing test scores, organising reviews and then organising and running assessment centre days. My job also requires me to call candidates to notify them of their assessment centre outcome and then aid in the matching process to find them a specific role within IBM.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my organisation skills as my job requires me to prioritise a large number of tasks. I have also developed my communication skills. I work in a high paced environment so it's essential to convey messages clearly to people around me. Particularly when running assessment centres where there are a number of different stake holders involved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed the programme. The responsibility granted to you and the ethos of the business is a pleasure to be a part of. Within the year I've made countless connections and friends that I hope to stay in contact with and there are plenty of social opportunities on top of your day job to get involved with.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised. You have good access to your Early Professional Manager in case you need to talk to them and there are Futures Quarterly Meetings every few months to catch up with others on the programme and the programme leaders. The meetings often contain speakers or activities specific to the scheme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a good amount of support from my employer. Each early professional is allocated a task manager and an Early Professionals Manager (EPM). My task manager and surrounding team are really helpful. My EPM who is a mentor figure responsible for overseeing your career development and pastoral needs is a fantastic contact to have as it's good to know there is someone there to turn to if you need to.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There are no formal qualifications on the Futures scheme, however, there are opportunities to complete online training and badged recognised externally across the industry. This is particularly handy as not only can you gain the skills and knowledge to improve upon your job performance, but you can use it as an opportunity to discover new interests and skills too.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Although there is no formal qualification provided by the Futures scheme, the additional training IBM offers is varied and therefore something to help everyones day job. Your ability to deepen your knowledge around your job and the wider business helps provide context for your role. It becomes easier to understand where you fit in, helping you to perform your job better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. For the past year, I've been a part of a 4-a-side football league. We also have many social meet-ups organised by the intern community such as a Christmas boat party. Many interns move into the area meaning there is a really big intern community and so you won't be short of friends.

  • 9a. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities and responsibilities you are given as an early professional are brilliant. The support you receive from the business is equally as good and there are many opportunities to use the programme to escalate yourself through the business. Equally, if you wish to move on at the end of the year then its a great year of work experience.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
  • Enjoy the opportunity as it won't be like anything you would have experienced. Make the most of the opportunity too. Push yourself to get involved in as much as you can and develop your skills and knowledge further. The skills you will learn will benefit you in all spheres of your life not just at work.
