My role as a junior project manager involves communicating with both the client and internal CGI employees about tasks that may need doing or the progress of where they are at. Depending on the day, i will also be attending meetings writing down new tasks that may be brought up.
There have been a lot of new skills that i have learnt. Communication within the workplace has been one of the biggest skills due to the level of professionalism and efficiency needed when talking to other employees. Another skill is my presentation for work has increased, this was a previous skill that has gotten a lot better.
My programme is enjoyable; however i believe that my job role is not in line with what i am studying at university and i am very keen to put what i am learning at university into real life practice as i feel i have obtained a lot of knowledge in my subject.
The structure and organisation of the programme is good. There are clear levels of hierarchy if any problems or issues need to be raised and the deadlines and criteria for those assessments are all made very clear to you. There are also clear levels of expectations required from each student progressing through each year at the university.
I receive a lot of support from my employer, especially in regards to the mentor program. My employer assigned me a mentor that has helped me throughout the duration of my course and has helped in both university and my job itself. There are also members of recruitment who have been on the course that help as well.
I receive a lot of support from my university. They always make it clear we can go to them for any support we need with university work and always reply to any questions we may have. They are understanding of how we work the other 4 days of a week so they help us a lot during the time we are at university.
I do not feel that my qualification effects my role at all. Heavily i believe this to be because my training qualification is not related to my job role at all and therefore does not effect it. I would like for my qualification to be in line with my job role.
There are lots of extra-curricular activities to get involved with. We have a sports and social club that runs lots of different events every month so there is always a social event to be going to which employees get a good discount on as long as they have signed up to the sports and social club.
Yes
Because it is a great starting point for someone just coming out of school. It is definitely a fast track way to mature in the business world and get a really good taste of what it is really like out in the real world from being at school all that time.
My main piece of advise would be too make sure you show you are eager and do research on the company and role you are looking to apply for. Stay positive and even if you do not have everything that role is looking for, make sure you are willing to learn and progress with new skills.
