On a day to day basis I am in my University studying my degree: Software Engineering. I do this for 2 semesters of first year and second year just like a normal student at the university that does not take part in the higher apprenticeship. In the summer I then take part in 10 weeks of placement at PwC where I will put what I have learnt at University into practice whilst learning new things on the go.
I have learnt many new skills and developed existing skills but this has been from the University course. I haven’t started my placement yet but we have had talks about what sectors we will be going into within the company and what new tasks we will be embarking on.
I really enjoy my programme, I like the way we are like normal students but also get to work in a company associated with our degree also
Our program is mostly well structured, it is the first year this company has done this so sometimes I feel like the organisation is a bit up in the air but as time goes on it is a lot less confusing and easier to understand than at the beginning.
We receive good amount of support from our employers through talks and emails. We were assigned a buddy at the beginning of the year, however, I think we are closer to the recruitment ladies we met at the beginning as opposed to the buddies we were matched with.
We receive lots of support from our lecturers and tutors, they are really helpful.
I feel like getting my qualification is a great foundation of knowledge before entering the workplace, it also means I can figure out what I’m more interested in if I have previously studied it.
We have been to a few networking events and we’re going to a social training week in London so there definitely have been quite a few opportunities so far.
Yes
I think it’s a much more beneficial way of learning about software engineering as you’re able to put things into practice instead of just studying them for a test and forgetting about them. As well as this, PwC is such a broad company so you can easily change roles and find out exactly what interests you.
Do your research and genuinely have a passion for the area of expertise you want to work in.
