  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • i test for defects in software that is used within branches in the bank. as well as this i do a full time HND/HND which lasts 2 years. on a daily basis i complete modules for BPP and i perform testing activities for the branch apps team. the work for the bank is running much smoother than the apprenticeship.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have learned a lot of new skills and developed on many skills in the time i have had so far. my colleagues are great in supporting me with this my time management and prioritisation skills have drastically increased as well as my general computer knowledge such as using outlook, word, excel and powerpoint.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my work in the bank but i struggle with the apprentice programme as it is poorly run and no one wants to take ownership for the errors that have been happening through out the time i have been on this. it would be a much greater experience if the apprenticeship side of things were smoother.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • not very well, we have not completed our HNC and this is 5 months after the due date, due to key members of staff leaving the apprentice programme and not being replaced in an efficient manner. there is poor communication between BPP and the organisation which is making the work a lot harder than it should be.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i receive lots of support from my employer, they helped me get a formal diagnosis for a disability i have and have supported me through my learning in ways i never thought were possible, they have boosted my confidence in the work place and as a person as a result of this. i could not ask for more.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • i receive extra support on my modules when needed as i have a learning difficulty that effects me greatly in theoretical work. i get good support from the accessor who writes the modules for us and delivers the class sessions, if needed i can email him for support with tasks outwith class room sessions which is greatly appreciated.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i feel it helps me in a small way as only small bits help me with my job role, with the general work place stuff i would say it helps a bit more than expected as some skills are transferable with some slight tweaking. im looking forward to seeing what else may help in the workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

  • 9a. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • RBS is a great place to work, they are very supportive and want to do what is best for their staff, they support healthy living and have great bonus schemes such as RBS select where you can benefit from shopping discounts, hotel discounts and discounts in restaurants but most importantly help you develop in your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • work hard during the application process study the RBS values and if you are fortunate enough to be chosen to work here speak up you will be listened to. i have no regrets in choosing to apply for RBS. the interviews may seem daunting for those who are not used to interviews but be vocal and talk to everyone communication is key.
