Working with robots and cranes helping provide maintenance when things breakdown and complete preventative maintenance tasks which include cleaning and stripping machines to find out if any of the life’s items are faulty. Day release at college in your final year means you can complete your foundation degree whilst learning a job you will be integrated into.
New skills I have learned would include fault finding on both electrical and mechanical systems. Having both worked with electrically biases and mechanically biased technicians, you can improve your skills in many select areas. Learned about PLC operation and how it controls robots. How to program robots and use them in manual.
The apprenticeship program is good. They offer more than ample support for you when you really need it. Having regular meetings does help with this. The job itself is amazing. Having the opportunity to be working with top class technology and to be able to know it inside out and fix it is brilliant.
The program has a structure. But with recent changes in the factory and constant fluidity of the company means that some people are often moved around more than others meaning some placements may be cut short. But there’s always time to revisit the placements if you were desperate to go back.
You receive a lot of support during your first and second year. As you get integrated into the company you have less and less support as you are being integrated into the working life and into the company. Support with regards to going into college on extra days to complete tasks is also an option which is good on BMWs part.
Working towards qualifications, you receive a lot of support when it comes to getting you through your mandatory quals (to get you qualified). The final degree and such is very off your own back and is very self supported. Though if you are having problems with the quality of teaching or other serious issues then the apprentice managers will ge tincolved and resolve it very quickly
There are a lot of different training opportunities that are very job role specific including working at heights, rescue from heights, SICK, ABB and others. The NVQ qual helps a lot when it comes to your everyday work as you have already proved you can work under time constraints and work safely and correctly.
I personally do not get involved with the extra curricular activities but I know there’s is always something going on such as football, mountain challenges and park runs. There are many events you can also go to representing BMW such as career events where you can talk to other like minded young people
Yes
It is a very good opportunity to work and get the qualifications at the same time. The work side helps you with communication as it makes you integrate with so many different people. Also there’s the benefit of a good pensions scheme and company car scheme that helps commuters
When applying don’t be shy if your called into an interview, just be yourself. Do your research on the plant beforehand. Show interest in the future and the car market and new technologies within the car industry. On the assessment days just do your best. And write a really good CV
