Maintenance apprenticeship. Mostly involves shadowing senior engineers; there are opportunities to do project work. A good mixture of electrical and mechanical work. You get to work with lots of different people so you are always learning new skills and techniques.
I have learnt many new skills, both in the practical aspect; but also in the theoretical aspect. I am studying for a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
The people are very nice to work with, everyone is very willing to share all of their knowledge with you. The company culture is fantastic.
There is always praise. I feel most valued when i can be trusted to work alone and work without guidance.

It would depend on what they wanted to do with their life; an Apprenticeship isn't the right route for everyone.
Start reading Engineering books. Get as much work experience at BMW as you can before you apply so you know what to expect on a daily basis.
