My role at CGI is a project manager, currently, managing a project giving the client security log monitoring. My average day is organizing resources allowing for the work on the new systems to be built and configured. This involves a mixture of face to face meetings, traveling to different offices as well as phone calls and emails.
Over my time at CGI I have learned a huge range of new skills as well as drastically improving skills I previously would have considered strengths. My time management is one of the key areas of development along with leadership, planning and both client and colleague interactions, this has allowed me to excel at my job.
I enjoy my program to a large extent, after leaving college I decided a degree apprenticeship was the right choice to kick start my career as well as continuing my learning. CGI has given me the support I need to do this and has meant I have been enjoying and will continue to enjoy my program.
The Degree Apprenticeship program at CGI is organized well with representatives both as CGI and Winchester University available to answer any questions if you are to have any. The week is split into one day of uni followed by four working. This dynamic works well allowing for enough time for a career as well as personal development.
For the majority of questions and queries that I have CGI is able to give me the support I need. This is done in the form of assigning a buddy from my project who is an experienced PM, this allows me to have a great point of reference if I'm in need.
The help I receive from the university is less than expected. The staff are average at replying to questions over email, often taking days to reply. This is vital due to how often we have contact with them due to the nature of the course. With regards to in class help, some lectures are unable to answer questions about summative work often changing goalposts week to week.
Certain aspects of my qualification at Winchester university help with my performance at work. However, due to the nature of my Job, some of the modules so far link less than others. By the end of the qualification, I will have gained more knowledge to help performance from the more relevant modules.
