  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Software Developer consultant, my day to day role involves meeting with clients and understanding their requirements for the software that they want. This involves using a number of frameworks to direct the production, for example Scrum, which involves working in short sprints, and very close to the client. As well as this, I am expected to keep up with my university work and manage my own time effectively.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • An initial 8-week intensive training period takes place at the beginning of your Capgemini journey. During these 8 weeks, I learned an introduction to object orientated programming. I learned how to build applications in Java, Python and Ruby, skills that I did not previously have. Additionally, I learned SQL Database Management, another skill that I did not previously hold. I also had the opportunity to develop my presentation skills as the final project involved producing a solution and delivering this solution to the client.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme. I've felt that my company cares about my personal development, and all they request is that I put in the hard work to achieve my career ambitions at Capgemini. There is a very strong apprentice community within Capgemini, and a large support network that I can go to for help. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience for me so far.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. Capgemini works very closely with Aston University, and this has allowed Capgemini to tweak and tailor our learning to our careers. We also have the opportunity to choose the direction that we take our career, as there are lots of different roles and pathways available for us to choose and follow.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer supports me a lot in terms of my personal development and my time at University. We have dedicated training days that we can book so that we can focus on university work or revise for upcoming exams. Additionally we have the opportunity to attend further courses and get certifications for things that we want to upskill ourselves on.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have a dedicated skills coach that helps us set goals and craft our future career. This indeed makes up an entire module called Professional Practice, which involves reflecting on what we have done over the past month, what we have learned, and the strengths and weaknesses that have been shown and can be worked on.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As a relatively new joiner to the programme, the qualification allowed me to understand the basics of what I will be doing as my career at Capgemini. It has laid the foundations for object orientated programming, and I see how the learning that I have completed fits into my day-to-day role at Capgemini.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are indeed extra-curricular activities, although it is up to you to join these activities as no one forces you. There are also opportunities to volunteer at Capgemini, with a dedicated team that helps school children across varying ages to think about their future careers, and give them tips on CV's interviews etc. These are all things that you can get involved in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Capgemini to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think that as a company, it has very important values, and others within Capgemini echo those values, making it a great place to work in. I also believe that Capgemini is a company that cares about its employees and their personal and professional development, and aids them to achieve their goals.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Capgemini?
  • Throughout the application process it is important to be relaxed and comfortable. The process is focused on getting the best out of you, do not think of it as you have to compete as there are always other roles available. It is important to consider that you also have to choose if Capgemini is right for you, as the programme is very demanding and fast paced. There is a lot of pressure to do well, as Capgemini want you to be the best you can be, so if you don't possess any self-driving attributes, you will struggle.
