On a typical day I will be analysing waste water samples i.e. sewage sludge; testing for E.coli/coliform bacteria. When there is spare time, I dispense the media required for this analysis into small aliquots in preparation for use. If I have any coursework to catch up with, there is often an opportunity to do so.
I have both gained many new skills and have built on those I already had. Some of these being more technical, which I have developed in the lab; like aseptic technique and microscopy. Whilst others are more general. For example, time management and adaptability. My interpersonal skills have been improved via the distance learning I recieve. I have to interact with my lecturer and group of other learners on a weekly basis; and often have to present PowerPoint's to them and answer any related questions.
I enjoy my programme very much. I like how my week is split up, as I have Monday's set aside for the academic side of the apprenticeship and then can focus on lab work for the rest of the week. I like the opportunities that are offered to me; such as site visits to other areas in the company e.g. sewage treatment works and there is a physiology enrichment trip being organised as part of my course. I attend these visits with the other apprentices in the labs, or with my classmates. This is nice as I have the opportunity to interact with a different group of people to normal who are all in a similar position to me; so we always have lots to talk about and get on well.
My programme is structured well. I have set days for completing my studies/lab work. When given a new task clear deadlines are always set, meaning I can manage my time accordingly. This is beneficial as my team leader knows not to arrange anything for me on those days, and also means I know what dates to avoid (or be able to give my lecturer notice) when booking annual leave.
I recieve a huge amount of support from everyone at Thames Water. I always have someone to approach if I require assistance with anything; everyone is very friendly. My line manager regularly checks in on me and we have regular one to one feedback sessions. Even outside of those set meeting times, he is always happy to offer help and advice if I need it.
During our weekly sessions, my lecturer is always happy to answer questions/clarify things if people are struggling. Outside of these sessions we have to contact him via email. Sometimes responses are a bit slow, yet the feedback tends to be useful. It may be useful to have a couple more contacts who we can reach out to if we need it, as understandably our lecturer cannot be available all the time.
Some of the content covered in the course is directly relevant to what occurs in the lab so can be applied in practice. It encourages me to ask more questions and improves my understanding of how a lab functions. Having a higher qualification allows more opportunities to progress further down the line.
Recently an email was circulated around the building letting people know of a weekly football meetup at a local park organised by employees. There is the opportunity to get involved in various volunteering events; and you are entitled to two days off a year to carry out this voluntary work.
Yes
This is a great environment to work in. Everyone is easy to get along with, you recieve loads of support from peers and working hours are flexible. There is lots to learn and different departments to circulate. We are entitled to two tea breaks a day, and in the communal area there is a free hot drinks machine to enjoy during our down time.
Do some research on the company, and ask any questions you may have. It is important to know some background information so that you know what you are getting youself into so that you can be sure it's the right place for you. If applying, be honest and show that you're passionate. Be yourself - the workforce here is really friendly and inclusive, there's no need to worry about fitting in.
