I cube up and order materials based on what the site needs next. I complete the office administration. I survey and provide levels. I ensure that the site is meeting health and safety criteria. I give daily briefings and toolbox talks. I do stock checks to make sure that we do not run out of PPE.
I have learnt how to operate various different machines (civil) such as laser levels, GPS etc. I have become much more proficient in ensuring health and safety matters are dealt with. I have become accustomed to Auto desk. I have learnt much more about the individual roles within the organisation.
I come from an office environment and didn't enjoy that very much. Having the opportunity to get outside and walk around when ever I need to is a huge benefit. The apprenticeship itself is challenging but I have enjoyed it. There is so much to learn that is necessary for the role.
The apprenticeship itself includes an NVQ although when on site most of the learning is self directed. There is no programme in place that I am aware of. The parts of the programme that require catching up have not happened and I have not been given some training such as PSR.
My employer understands that I will not know everything so early and the support provided by my immediate manager and mentor is good. They take time to speak with me and help me understand things and take the time to physically show me how to operate the needed equipment that I use.
The tutors are good although it can seem that at times they are overloaded with work. At times I need to wait weeks for feedback and at times the feedback quality can be basic. The tutors themselves are helpful otherwise and keen to get the most from you in most aspects.
There are already aspects of the training that I have been able to use within my role but my qualification isn't a strict civils pathway and so there are some aspects of the training that I feel are superfluous to requirements. Overall I would endorse this training that I am having.
There are some activities such as football charity matches but working n site, most people tend not to partake in these events and turning up to an event where you know nobody can seem a daunting task especially for someone so new to the business. There is also a Christmas party but the same applies.
Yes
I have no experience of working for other large construction firms but I can say that I have not yet experienced anything that I found to be unprofessional or that would taint my view of the company. I enjoy the time I spend at work even when the days can be tough.
Be open minded and prepared for the banter especially if you are site based. The office can be quiet. Be prepared to get your hands dirty and to help out wherever and whenever it is required, don't spend all your time in the office and get to know the men on the ground.
