  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a data scientist in the machine learning lab which entais working on all stages of the data science project lifecycle, including aquiring data and feature engineering, building statistical models in python and making sure the software product is ready for live. On a day to day basis my role varies from programming in python, planning the next steps and communicating with stakeholders.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a wide range of skills. These include planning the backlog and thinking strategically of the long term plan, communicating the technical aspects of the product to stakeholders in simple terms, presenting data insights and findings to a non-technical audience and giving and receiving good quality peer review feedback.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My job is very enjoyable and the 3 day long APM course was interesting. However, overwall I find some aspects of the programme rather stressful. For instance, our provider assigned training coaches to us who have to make sure we keep track of our progress. I find the calls with my coach very stressful, pushy and unneccessary.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The beginning was very badly organised as it took us a long time to get onboarded but since then it's been well structured, the learning ourcomes and requirements were clear from day one and Kaplan makes sure that we are reminded of all the thinks we need to do.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If I ask for it, I receive a sufficient amount of support. When I need some more time, I am always given enough time to work on my qualification which is really nice. My line manager is very understanding and asks me frequently how I am getting on with the apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive sufficient amount of support from my training provider. They allocated a lot of resouces and time to make sure we are progressing as we should be. Sometimes I feel like their attitude is a bit too pushy but I understad that it is in their interest to make as many students pass as possible.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am rather sceptical about this. As my job is quite technical, I only utilise a few skills of the project management apprenticeship. However, I always try to rememebr the other thinks I learned as well but I feel like some of the concepts are so out dated that I could never use them in my job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, we have regular socials, board game nights and we also have off-sites twice a year when the whole team gathers in a different office (usually partner companies) and tries to solve real life issues in small teams. I am personally also very active and recently started organising a running club in my team.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Lloyds Banking Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a really nice and laid back company to work for, one that puts a lot of emphasis on personal development and empowering people to learn new skills and gain new experiences. The culture is also very nice and all my colleagues and senior leaders are approachable and inspiring.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Lloyds Banking Group?
  • Make sure the culture is the right fit. Some people who are more ambitious might feel like things go really slow at LBG. However, if they determine that the culture is the right fit, I would encourage them to research the company as well as some of the senior managers so they can talk about that in the interview.
