I do a variety of different things day to day but they all involve helping quantity surveyors do jobs. By doing this I am gaining a knowledge of all different aspects of the job simultaneously. The jobs I do change within the month to hit varied deadlines, CTCs CVs etc
I have learned pretty much everything I do day to day from other people in my team and the company. I have existing skills that have benefited me such as mental arithmetic but in terms of carrying out the requirements of my job that has all been taught to me.
I really enjoy my job, however I think the college side of my apprenticeship is missing practical aspects. I know I wont have to level out and set etc when I become a quantity surveyor but I still think I should still have knowledge of this as it is on the courses and I have not done anything practical yet nor have I had a site visit from my teacher. other than that I can't fault it.
The first circa 2 months of my apprenticeship I was placed in estimating where I learned little about my current job I appreciate this was because my mentor was new and was learning himself but I felt as though I wasn't earning my wage, however now I am working with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who are exceptionally skilled quantity surveyors who l believe can train me up to their skill level.
I receive support in any task I do if I need help or there's something I'm not sure of I raise it with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and he gives me a comprehensive answer in most cases instantly, I have no issues with the support I am given I think it is more than sufficient.
I do not feel as though my quantification has any relevance to my job role but I appreciate there is no level 3 quantity surveying course and my course can be used as a platform to access quantity surveying qualifications that can help me further my career and learn things that I may not learn in my job.
I have not been involved in any extra-curricular activities that have been offered to me yet however I have paid to go to the races with some of the other Seaham staff of which I'm looking forward to, I think the opportunities to do such things with the company are plentiful.
Yes
I think the company offers opportunities within the industry that are second to none. the company is reliable and varied so even if you decide for instance you don't want to work in with Northumbrian Water anymore you could move elsewhere in the company such as the coal authority. However I don't think this would be an issue as it is hard to get bored of something that is different everyday.
I would tell applicants to think outside of the box the recruitment process is not your standard interview I believe the reason for having this process is to see how people think not to see who can put on a front for the interview. There is that many applicants you need to make yourself stand out not fit in.
