My role involves safeguarding and protecting the Global IT production environment from uncontrolled or unapproved change, minimising the risk of disruption or outage to IT Services and the potential financial, regulatory or reputational damage that might ensue as a result. Day to day tasks involve offline reviews if new changes, change approval board meetings, failed change meetings, reporting for new changes and more
I have definitely learned new skills, would be slightly concerning if I didn't. These consist of basic Microsoft excel skills and commands such as 'VLOOKUP' etc. I have learned how to create pivot tables and other illustrative tools within our software's. on top of this I have learned and developed my interpersonal skills, not only through email communication but also presentation and meetings.
I enjoy the programme quite a lot, it is not what I expected it would be like but is enjoyable and most importantly its shaping me into being a great employee with a vast skill set and experience. I love having the opportunity to work and shadow other colleagues even from a variety of departments and business units, it's very eye opening and refreshing to see how we all come together to keep the business running.
The structure of the programme itself could be managed slightly better. Since the start you are in the unknown about what team you will come work for and what your day to day job will entail. Perhaps if there was better communication at the start I could have prepared myself more for this job or had a better idea and understanding as well as the choice of course to decline or seek another opportunity. Some tips I would suggest would be better communication during the onboarding process. Our interview dates were moved multiple times followed by a few months gap of no communication on when the start date will be etc. On top of this the process of settling in is also not the most pleasant here. Perhaps if there was a starter pack with generic instruction for example setting up requests for mailbox access and so forth that everyone will need would be hugely helpful.
I receive quite a lot of support from all colleagues whenever I need it. Personally though I don't like asking for help and get a little shy but working in this environment has given me the confidence to speak up more as I comprehend the importance of timely deliveries etc and am able to priorities work over my emotions.
I receive a good amount of support form the training provider. Monthly reviews are part of the standard routine to see if everything is on track and as planned. Also in these sessions other subjects are cover such as health and safety and general queries and concerns which was comforting to know that I had even more support outside of my team or even the organisation. None the less, the process of on boarding us onto our course with a third provider company came with some difficulty. We had a few set back where due to security issue we were not able to upload or hand in our coursework for months and had to seek alternative long winded methods. Communication between the training company was often misguiding and confusing which made timelines for deadline unclear. I found myself stressing and under pressure for no reason at times which made me lack in performance at work.
The qualification has allowed me to have a better understanding of how not only this business functions but also how small companies function too. It informed me on the general roles in any organisation and through lots of research I now know more about my own business. it opened my eyes to how I am a business administrator to an extent which is something I would not have considered before and has allowed me to value my work more.
There are lots of opportunities that you can get involved in, there is a huge community and push for giving back. this not only entails giving back to colleagues through activity packed days out but also to local communities, schools and charities. I personally like to get involved in a lot of these such as volunteering at British Summer Time Festival, doing work experience weeks with secondary school children and helping out by cleaning our local country parks
Yes
Barclays is a great organisation. It is filled with opportunities not only for a huge variety of jobs and roles but also for advancing and progression. their values are truly reflecting in their workers for the most part and its just a great community to be a part of altogether.
keep an open mind for what you are getting yourself into. Don't get disheartened by the tedious process of on boarding and waiting for communications. Consider keeping the job you are currently in if applicable for a while longer until everything is confirmed and set in stone so that you are able to provide for youself in the meaniwhile.
