  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Showroom advisor is to inspire and advise customers on their dreams kitchens and bathrooms, to give them a positive customer journey and ensure they return to b&Q. It is also general advice, stock flow and ensuring the shop floor is looking great at all times.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learned loads of new skills, from learning how to use a CAD system, to processing finance agreements and learning how to listen better to not only customers but staff to, I've developed my knowledge and confidence, as well as this I've learned how to deal with tough situations.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I've only been on the programme for two months as my start date was delayed due to sickness, however so far I am really enjoying it. It has given me the opportunity i not only wanted, but needed to grow, it is very exciting and completing my maths is a added bonus.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very organised and structured, everything is planned in advance and i always know what i am doing, I know where everything is should I need it and if there is anything that I struggle with or are unsure about then I know how to contact my regional trainer.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My trainer has been fantastic - as I said it was delayed due to sickness however my trainer Vicky has been fantastic in supporting and getting my apprenticeship started, she showed me where all the resources I need are, how to access them and how to contact her if I have any questions or if there is anything in general I need

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As much support as I want or need, I know exactly how to contact Vicky either at the end of the phone or through an email. She didn't put any pressure on me however has encouraged me and been nothing but helpful and supportive when working towards qualifications, even making me feel at ease when I had to do some maths in front of her - maths isn't my strong point and it can get embarrassing for me.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A lot better, knowing that if you aren't sure of something or just have a general query or needing support that you have someone in place to offer that to you is really helpful, it makes it more enjoyful and less stressful, as well as this it offers you the support that you would need.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We don't have any social activities in our store, however I know alot of B&Q stores do offer these, we have Yammer which is sort of a professional networking website, other then that we are lacking in that in our store in particular, it would certainly boost morale if there was.

  • 9a. Would you recommend B&Q to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • For someone my age, B&Q is a great place to learn new skills and learn about working in retail, customer service and general DIY tips, it has some opportunities to grow and has a good wage. It is a new challenging experience which whilst still retail it differs to the normal retail store setting.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to B&Q?
  • Take everyday as it comes, never miss an opportunity to learn or to better yourself and remember, it is just a job. B&Q Is different to normal retail stores and sometimes you can get frustrated at not having enough knowledge, remember you are not an expert and you are there for the customer, so always put them first.
