  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • For the first year largely attend collage to develop engineering based skills such as welding and bench fitting. In addition to this time is spent at the factory in an assembly role. In the second year the balance adjusts so more time is spent at the plant. During collage closures we spend time at the plant.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As someone who has not before studied engineering based subjects the majority of the skills involved have been new. This is delivered mainly by the collage. I have been able to learn basic bench fitting techniques, have been able to learn MIG welding and learn how to operate lathes and construct circuits.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • As someone who has a passion for cars it is of course exciting to spend time in the plant and see and learn how cars are produced. The side I did not expect to enjoy as much as I do is the collage work. I have enjoyed being able to learn new practice skills I never had the opportunity to learn in school.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The collage side of the program is particularly organised. There are clear set timetables which are rarely modified. If alterations are needed then we are informed in advance. Furthermore the structure of the apprenticeship was clearly explained upon enrollment. The work side of the apprenticeship sometimes requires faster communication however this is uncommon.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer provides care for physical health with medical checks to ensure employees heath does not degrade as a result of work. Rolls Royce particularly succeeds in making its apprentices feel supported with an excellent welcome to the company and opportunities to show family members the factory and a annual family day which welcomes employees and family members to the factory with an event.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The collage has been great at supporting me. As someone who is new to many practical skills I have received excellent teaching and guidance to complete tasks. The introduction to new crafts may have been daunting without this support. This has been handeled particularly well when considering the mix of abilities which are catered to in the collage.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification gained is particularly broad. It contains a variety of mechanics based skills, workshop skills and some theory based knowledge such as health and safety laws. This is likely because the skills allow us to have a broad base knowledge before specializing if the opportunity allows to pursue a higher level of education.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As I am only in the workplace at an average of once a week it is difficult for me to asses the extra circular opportunities provided to me by Rolls Royce directly. I have however seen notices for social groups. However the collage provides a plethora of extra curricular activities such as sports teams.

  • Firs it is important you get people to check your CV for any improvements. Second as part of the interview process I had to talk about a project.
