As Team Support at Tesco my role is to support my colleagues on the checkouts, this could be with an issue that occurs or general queries. I have my own group of checkout colleagues of which i make sure their training is up to date and pass over any relevant information within the business. I am also a role model of great service.
Since completing the apprenticeship i have definitely learnt to step back a little in my role and to take more notice of the people around me, not just completing the operational parts of my job. I can now easily work out the needs of different customers and help them with any issues they may have.
I am really enjoying the apprenticeship programme, i like to learn alongside my role as i believe it can help you improve within your role. It also helps with seeing the dynamics of the different departments withing the shop which in turn means you can then support them if needed.
The programme itself it structured very well with a good amount of reading to activities that need to be completed. Each module follows on very well from the last so the programme flows much better and makes more sense. My mentor is also very good and supportive and regularly checks i am ok.
When i first started the programme i found that i was getting alot of support from my employer however we have recently gone through a big structure change and hours that we are given as a store have decreased therefore making it more difficult to spend the time off the shop floor.
My tutor is extremely supportive and regularly contacts me to make sure that everything is going ok and if i need any additional support. When we meet after completing every module i find she makes me very relaxed and we regularly run over time because we start going into depth about what i have done.
I believe that the skills and knowledge that i have learnt/am learning will help towards making me better within my role and hopefully when training to become a Checkout manager in the future as i will be more confident, this is something i am excited to do in the future.
Unfortunately at the moment there is no extra-curricular activities that colleagues can get involved with however we do try a couple of times a year to get everyone together for a social event such as the Christmas Party and summer BBQ, it would be great if we could in the future though.
Yes
I have always found that Tesco have been very supportive of me, when stepping up to my current role and when trying to better myself. They are also great in supporting any time off or holidays i may need as i have two young children, this job is extremely flexible.
Make sure you are open and honest about yourself when you first start and what you are available to do to avoid any issues from occurring further down the line. Embrace who you are and use it to your advantage! There is always ways to better yourself, whether it being joining apprenticeship schemes etc.
