My day-to-day role consists of checking customer storage systems and ensuring everything is running smoothly. If they are not running smoothly, I make recommendations on how this could be improved. I upgrade customers systems too. This could be by installing new kit of installing new firmware/hardware. I also complete training courses to make sure I am qualified to do what I do.
I have developed my time keeping, contactibility and accountability skills. This has helped me to improve as an employee. I have learned the importance of being contactible and reliable. To begin with, I was not accountable for my errors. This was a problem and I have realised why it's important to be honest and hold up your hands once you've made a mistake.
I am beginning to enjoy my role more and more. At first, I didn't have much to do. I struggled to remain productive when there was little for me to do. This was picked up on by my manager who rethought the strategy and completely changed the way we were assigned work.
Since HPE hadn't run an apprenticeship like this before, it was difficult for them to know how to structure it. They underestimated how long we would take to learn topics and they overestimated my starting knowledge. Since things were adapted, I have been given more support and better opportunities to learn to help me become more self-sufficient in my role.
I am offered plenty of support. I have a mentor who teaches me new things and shows me how things work. I go on site with him and he talks me through the process of whatever we are there to achieve. He gives me tasks and gives me feedback on how well I have completed them.
I receive plenty of support from my employer. I am given a day off each week to keep up-to-date with my QA work. This has taken some of the strain out of the learning process. Knowing that I have a whole workday to complete uni work has meant that I am not stressed about fitting it into my working week.
So far, I do not believe that it has. The modules we have taken part in so far, are not something I will do in my role. I am aware of some upcoming modules which I will do, will help me in my day-to-day role. However, so far, I do not feel I have benefitted from the skills I have learned in my qualification.
I am not aware of any extra-curricular activities that I can take part in. We have tried to organise our own football team. However, it's proving more difficult to line up our calendars than we thought. Hopefully, this is something that can change soon as I would like to build up a network throughout the business.
Yes
I believe the opportunities are great in HPE as the company is so large. There are roles that would interest everyone as there are departments that handle all topics. My manager is happy to push me in the direction I want for my career. The support and encouragement I have received is more than I was expecting.
I would make sure that you knew exactly what you were applying for. I was unsure as to how technical my role was going to be until I started. I would also make sure that you proactively look for work at the beginning to meet new people and to get your feet firmly under the table.
