As an apprentice technical consultant I am required to go out to clients, and provide a technical solution whether that be a data management, data migration, server maintenance or another form of issue. At this stage I mainly shadow senior consultants to understand the intricacies of the role and the techniques they employ in order to complete a job.
I have developed both technical and soft skills in my time doing this role. Currently I am picking up SQL Server and JavaScript as technical skills and coding languages. I have also had interactions with various asset management tools. I have also developed various soft skills such as public speaking and report writing
I enjoy my program very much. Compared to school or university it doesn't feel overly competitive or that there is a glass ceiling on your learning. Everyone is always happy to help you in your personal development and you truly have full control over your learning and career development.
The program is fairly well organised. There are regular workshops, development opportunities and projects to get involved in. As there is such a huge gap in knowledge and experience between apprentices and senior consultants it can sometimes be difficult to get practically involved. This also means there is a high level of flexibility and there are no rigid boundaries confining you to a specific environment.
I am allocated the 20% off the job training I need for my degree in which I find that I am able to complete the work I need. Everyone around the office is always happy to give up their time to explain new concepts to me and coach me through certain topics.
QA provides me with the training I need with 2 workshops per module and online training: quizzes, PowerPoint and videos. The tutors are always on hand to help out and will usually respond within a few days. The material usually prepares me well for the exams and assignments for the module.
At the moment I don't feel like the qualification doesn't quite help me on my day to day role. The modules I have taken will no doubt help me later in my career however as of now it doesn't have too much relevance. I hope for it to be more aligned in the future.
There are plenty of networking and social activities within the company. Networking events are advertised by company email chains. Within my office there are opportunities to get involved in football and yoga. There are also chances to get involved in charity and community outreach projects as well which counts towards volunteering hours.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has taught me so much in the short time I have been here. Everyone lives the values of the company: Innovate, Partner, Act. Everyone's always happy to help out and give you opportunities. I wake up every day actually enthusiastic and excited to go to work.
Do your research on the company when you come for interview. Having a can do, positive attitude and never being afraid to contribute to the discussion. Having various different experiences to put on your CV also helps you to stand out on paper. Being outgoing and talking to people and building networks is a crucial skill.
