The first few days consisted of gaining skills and an insight on the company. We then moved on to group challenges that were focused around team building. We had to do a few presentations but there was one big one at the end which we worked towards during the last week. We also received a certificate in leadership by CMI which is Level 2. This allowed us to stand out as we have other qualifications. I got to work with many different people of all levels. From apprentices to the biggest partners of the company.
I obviously learnt a lot about accounting and what it really means to be an accountant. Learning that there were a countless number of ways to become an accountant was a delight as I knew that I could do things that I enjoy whilst also working towards a career in accounting. The main skills I learned were time management, logical thinking and team building. I also gained a lot of confidence as presenting an idea about a product for 2030 was quite difficult to express. I got to see the companies that EY works with, such as Baker and McKenzie. I learnt a lot about the company and the skills that I’d need to be a successful account. One huge shock was that accountants don’t just to “number crunching” all day everyday.
I enjoyed my work experience a lot. I learned so much about the industry, company and business. I learned how to cooperate with others successfully while having fun at the same time. Despite EY being the only Big Four company to offer paid work experience, the work I done in harmony with everyone just showed me that I was fit to be an accountant. It was fun meeting new people my age who shared the same interests as me. Knowing that I would make friends for a long time. The networking part of the work experience was also very fun as I was able to meet people from such a diverse range of backgrounds
It was very well organised. Everything we done everyday was planned out, went smooth and there were no issues. It was so well organised that the staff were able to get a partner judge for our final presentation who was very time limited. We were told where to go when and nobody went missing, there were no accidents and everything was on time.
I learned that EY has a very flexible culture. People are from so many different backgrounds. Some people grew up poor, some rich, some went to state schools some went to private. I personally think it would be an amazing place to work for me as I fit in so well with the environment.
It helped a lot. I wasn’t sure whether i wanted to go into accounting but this work experience really opened my eyes. I was able to experience for the first time what it is like to work in a big company that’s very international and has clients all over the globe. It really showed me what links accountants from EY are able to make.
Yes, we were paid above the minimum wage. If someone was travelling from really far and was not able to afford it, they were given money in advance. It was very good for people who may not have this type of opportunity. As we were paid , nobody was limited in terms of whether they were able to attend or not.
We had many networking events. As I said before, we also got to go to other companies such as Baker and McKenzie and were able to network with people there. We met new people on a day to day basis along with having mentors for just under a year after finishing the work experience. This would possibly be a contact for life
Yes
It’s a great place to work. It’s very relaxed and nobody is always competing. There are so many opportunity’s to progress within the company and industry with really high pay. Anyone would be able to fit in as there are people of all ethnicities, so anyone can find a friend and someone they can relate to.
I would say really try to be positive and confident. They look for confident people when they call and make sure your CV is good. Make sure that your information is up to date. Even if your qualification may not be in the right place, show the interviewer why you’re good for the position and why you’re irreplaceable. Be enthusiastic and stand out from the crowd.
