Apprentice S&T Review

My role is to learn and develop my skills and a signalling technician. This involves day to day carrying out routine maintenance, such as servicing points machine, signals, AWS, TPWS and more along side being on call to attend faults when required so that the railway infrastructure remains operational 24/7

I have learnt and developed both new and existing skills. The apprenticeship has allowed me to developing my ability to think as well as develop my electrical knowledge and how to maintain electrical components. I have learnt many new skills and the main one being leadership which is key when working in a team.

I really enjoy the apprenticeship scheme offered by Network Rail as it has helped me to become a part of something bigger. Its been a fantastic opportunity to make life long friendships and the world class instructing at the training facilities makes the whole scene really relaxed and an enjoyable environment.

The programme on the whole is well organised but there are times when it could be improved as it is sometimes felt like we are left to figure important things out by ourselves. The structure is effective though and the residential side of the scheme works well for most people.

I receive ample support from my employer and they are always on hand to answer any questions I may have. They provide me with all the information and resources I need to ensure that I have a good work place and that my safety is catered for at all times.

During the first initial residential period of the apprenticeship the training provider where good. They assisted when needed with all NVQ work and the information they provided made the reports fairly simple and easy to understand. Some of the trainers were fantastic whilst others not so good, which really let them down.

The qualifications I am doing help me massively in my role as a signalling technician as it has allowed me to develop knowledge and skills that means I can work safely and effectively on the rail infrastructure as well as developing my skills and a team player and a leader.

There are some opportunities to be involved in things outside of work. There is a massive selection because everyone has different tastes and a life outside of work, but everyone at the depot is friendly and most members of the teams meet up outside of work time as there work bond has developed into friendship.

I would recommend Network Rail as an employer not only to a friend but to anyone because they are responsible for keeping the railway moving and being a part of that is special. To assist people moving up and down the country daily and being well rewarded through the pay package.

If you are considering applying for Network Rail make sure you have safety at the fore front of your mind as the company as a whole is safety conscious. Also prove that you can work hard and are prepared to graft as well as can work well in a team and lead tasks.
