Apprentice Review

i work with a team doing ultrasonic testing which makes sure that any defects are found and reported to the appropriate person. this involves testing defects highlighted by the UTU train and verifying or monitoring them. using ultrasound the sperry and probes look for a full signal response in order for the rail to pass as safe.

I have learnt organisation skills which have come from having to deal with lots of paperwork. I have also developed better team building skills due to the fact I am always working in different teams, often with people I am unfamiliar with. I have learnt practical skills in my department which Include ultrasonic testing.

I enjoy the program thoroughly, I wake up every morning with a spring in my step ready to attack the day and do what's best for not only me but for my company! I believe the theory side of the job could be planned a little better but over all I still enjoy it.

the theory side of the course could be improved as some people have to travel to training centres on the other side of the country over and over. the information on what you need to do when returning to depot to complete the competency is also quite poor. Practically the course is organised well.

I really do have a good support system in place where I can always talk to people and get help if required. there are also colleugues and managers from other departments willing to help and ensure you are well supported. the whole company works well to ensure this is the case

when in training centers there are always staff that are available to help you. they answer any questions and always do their best to ensure you can get on with the work you are set. work is always promptly marked and given back to you on how to improve if this is necessary.

i am in a department that doesn't require all the competencies i learn, the course has not yet been adapted for this as the case has been repeated and still the same problem is present. this is something that needs to be looked into in the future. it would help the apprentice a lot.

when in the initial training centres there are sport activities, team building activities and charitable events to get involved in, these are not always compulsory but most get involved. after the training centres there are no extra activities back at your local depot. this would be a good thing to introduce to depots.

Yes

because you learn a lot whilst on the course and can come on to the scheme only needing GCSE's. for a scheme only needing these qualifications you get a very good job after it which is highly skilled and well paid. the scheme can offer roles for a variety of personal skills.

i would say you need to take your time on the application process and take as much information to the interview as this part of the process is very competitive. when on the course i would say to get on with the work and complete it way before deadlines and not leave anything to the last minute.
