  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I assist with trained and qualified engineers and their day to day tasks such as maintenance work on the rail infrastructure. This included making sure signals and change points are working as they should. My shifts are a mix of days and nights and I am always buddied up so that I can learn from someone

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • At the start of my apprenticeship I had to attend the training school where I learnt how to work well in teams and develop my communication and confidence. I also found myself gaining knowledge on my job role and different job roles available once qualified with the company as well

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme. It is interesting and I like the fact I’m always out and about. I get treated well by network rail and get to get paid good which will rapidly increase when I qualify. I also like how well structured my programme is and how much I can progress

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is organised really well. My first 6 months I had to stay in a training school where I got food and gym provided for by the company. I also got to learn what I needed to in order to be safe when I go out on site to.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer offer so much support and help especially at their training school where you go in the first year. I also have the people I work with in teams who have hands on experience that support and show me how to do tasks. They also make sure I understand and give me a go

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider offer the training school based near Coventry which offers so much support. There’s always people around to ask for help and the best facilities to learn in. Other support included giving me books and resources so that I am able to complete all my work to a good standard

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps me because it provides me with all the knowledge I need to be able to do my job. I learn about all the relevant things and can put them in to practice when I’m out working. I feel like it helps me work safely as well as it keeps me up to date with regulations

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are loads of extra events to get involved with throughout the company. There’s a lot of sporting events and also a lot of networking that goes on which creates opportunities to meet others from different aspects across the company. This is to help dictate what job would suit best

  • 9a. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a steady career with a lot of stability. There are plenty of options for different job roles throughout the company and there are a range of different opportunities for the future. Not only is is one of the best places to work for progression but it also pays really well when qualified


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • I would probably advise for someone to be confident and not to worry if they don’t have much or any experience as the company accepts people from all aspects of life. They try to train you their way and give you all of the support needed so you can do things correctly
