  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job includes me making sure the rail way around the uk is kept up to British standards and this includes testing of infrastructure and signals. If any thing is damaged my job is to check whether it can be fixed or replaced and work with a team to get it repaired

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt various skills from being able to test using the correct equipment to working in teams and and working out why things may be going wrong or how they can be fixed. The main skill I would say I have learnt is working to a good a safe standard whilst under pressure

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy The fact that I am able to go around to different sites In a van and I am not always working in the same place, I like the way I am trusted and have been given more responsibility as time has gone on and I’ve gained more confidence

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well organised and has a good overall layout for the 3 years giving me a good under standing of how much I have complete and how much left I have to do in order to gain my qualifications. The first year Has a lot of classroom work

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer are good at supporting where they can and all of the qualified people I work with are helpful and try their best to show me the ropes and answer any questions if I have any. I also get given feedback every six months in review days where I get told what I could do better

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support and I get a lot of time to reflect on what I have done and a chance to set targets for myself so that I can make the most of my apprenticeship. I also get feed back where I get to see what I’m doing well

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is completely relevant and gives me a good understanding of jobs I do in my role. I understand voltages and current as well as mechanical failures and how to visually inspect and what to look out for I think that it is a really good apprenticeship to learn

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of events including social and network events which get every one involved and build team moral and bonding. It is a good way of building strong relationships and builds trust which in my opinion is important when working in a dangerous environment. As it is important to trust people you work with

  • 9a. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • There are so many jobs that network rail offer and there is so much to learn and it is a good way to get well recognised qualifications which will earn you good money once you are qualified. The company also have a wide range of benefits and it is a fun job


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • I would recommend being yourself but also showing you are hard working and care about your work the main thing they want to see is that you are sensible and are able to work to a high standard and all hours whilst under pressure and even in tight environments or spaces
