  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Everyday in my first 6 months I attend lessons in a training centre environment where I learn about my job role and how to carry out maintenance tasks safely and efficiently. I also get taught about the rail way and how dangerous it can be if not worked on safely

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my basic skills of using hand tools correctly and how to identify if they are safe for use prior to using them. I have also found ways more effective when working Under pressure as well as working well with others and sharing work loads within a team

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is quite enjoyable when all is going well. As long as I know what I am doing and have an understanding on how things work then I am confident and enjoy my work. I enjoy the training centre and like having my own independence living away from home

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is structured well enough having a good amount of time to focus on my qualifications and get a lot of time for study as well as good feedback from assessors. I feel it could be slightly differently laid out if we was given more time for our college work then would be less stressful

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get given enough support. Plenty intact with the amount of people that work for the company there is always someone to ask about how something works or for little tips and tricks and advice on how to do things better. I feel that they are ally want us to do well as apprentices

  • I get given enough support. Plenty intact with the amount of people that work for the company there is always someone to ask about how something works or for little tips and tricks and advice on how to do things better. I feel that they are ally want us to do well as apprentices

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps me as I find it easier to work in a team safely and also efficiently I get a good understanding and have developed my knowledge on what working on the railways consists of. Learnt about the long shifts and how concentration is important at all times as well

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am always involving myself with activities and events outside of work as I really enjoy the social side of things. I like I enjoy being part of something and feel satisfied when I achieve something therefore whenever events are posted I like to sign up and get involved it also helps me meet new people

  • 9a. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Massive company with a fantastic reputation for railway and infrastructure. I feel that it is a well paid apprenticeship with a lot of reachable goals for the future and I feel that I have a good future with the company. There are also plenty of jobs throughout the network so will likely secure a job after my apprenticeship


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • I would give advise on making sure you practice for the assessment dAy, prepare yourself for the telephone interview and be polite when talking to staff. I would also advise carrying yourself in a smart and well behaved manner making sure you are focused on your job role at all times
