Technical Apprentice Review

On a day to day business within BAE Systems would vary depending on what department I was in. I rotated around the business and moved from different departments such as design, structures, general offices and the quality department. My job role is mainly technical which involves mostly computer work and programmes.

I have developed my computer skills quite a lot and i have also learned how to use specific programmes we have here at Brough. There are a lot of databases that are used widely in the company. I have also improved on other general computer skills such as Excel and Word.

I enjoyed the programme a lot and i think there are a lot of opportunities for young people within the business to grow and develop a range of skills. I enjoyed my time as an apprentice, and now as a full time employee it's been really helpful on getting me on a good career path that i enjoy.

My apprenticeship was very well organised. Myself and others who started when i did had a main team leader who took care of our wellbeing. There was a system in place to move each of us at specific times of the year to different departments. We also attended college once a week.

I recieve a lot of support from my employer and apprenticeship leader. We were always asked if we needed any help with work or completing college assignments etc. Our apprenticeship leader and a few other members of staff from HR mainly ensured we were looked after well and happy with working at BAE.

We changed training providers throughout the apprenticeship as we completed our ONC, HNC and HND. One training provider was fairly poor, however our company quickly sorted this problem and once we completed the work with them, the company cut ties with this college. Another provider was HETA who was ok but not great either. This is not the company's fault however and they tried their best to help resolve problems.

My qualifications are very general with the term 'engineering'. I have learnt about both electronical and mechanical engineering as well as general maths and business management. I think that these skills are good for the work i am doing within the company however some skills can only be improved through working at BAE themselves.

I have been invited out on evenings and meals out with various members/groups of staff which is always nice, especially when you're the newest member of the team and you are moving around the company. A lot of departments will have monthly evenings out so it's nice to have the opportunity to network with them at these.

BAE Systems is a really good company to work for. From my experience, i have been treat well and also been able to speak up and voice my worries or ambitions and be heard. I feel that this apprenticeship is a great opportunity for younger people and its gets you off onto a good career path as well.

I would advise someone to be themselves, try and get some information about the company and products and learn about this beforehand. The interview process is quite lengthy where basic math skills are tested. Take your time to complete the application and also just try your best. If at the interview stage, remember to ask questions and think through any answers you're going to give.
