This work experience was an amazing insight into day-to-day life at a law firm as well as mini-classes that helped with entering law and what it would be like working in law. In my practice groups, I was assigned to do draft responses to emails as well as research into the areas I was in and applying them to real-life cases. The members of the teams immediately made me feel welcomed and a part of the team; working alongside them gave me a welcoming feel to the firm. Each member I interacted with at Pinsent Masons was friendly and answered all of my questions.
During my time at Pinsent Masons, I learned how to structure emails and responses in a professional manner but also what is needed to be focused on. As well as this I gained more information about what it takes to be a lawyer and what skills are wanted in this industry such as good communication and team work.
I greatly enjoyed this placement, meeting other students who also were on the programme which I am still in contact with currently as well as working in such a highly regarded firm. It was more than I expected as I didn't expect to be welcomed so quickly and have normal conversations with other team members after as well as learning more about the department I was working in.
I think the work experience was more organised during my second group as in my first practice group my supervisor seemed rushed as they did not know what to and what work to set. Other than this, the work experience seemed well organised with the lessons given and the work in the practice group.
Pinsent Masons has a friendly environment from the team members as well as the open layout in the firm. I was immediately introduced to each member of the teams and felt included within both as I was able to have normal conversations with each member about law but also about life outside the law firm.
This placement helped confirm I am interested in the commercial area but also gave me an interest in the field of intellectual property as I had never thought about before. By taking this work experience it gave a new insight into a field I never would think I would enjoy, creating an interest that I might want to go into in the future. I still do want to experience different departments to gain further insight.
No, this was an unpaid work experience.
I was able to network with members in my group and anyone who was in the mini-classes we were involved in. I do wish I could have met more people from different departments and experience.
Yes
The firm provided an amazing experience and gave a great insight into how a highly regarded law firm works as well as providing information.
Be confident and interact with everyone you can, meeting new people and working in different areas may not seem fun but it provides a great representation of real-life and can be useful in the future. Ask for feedback and take into consideration what they say as it will always be constructive and will be useful. Go out of your comfort zone, although it may be uncomfortable at first you can learn new things and meet more people but also give you a chance to put across your knowledge.
