My Role day to day is to learn as much from the experienced technicians as possible on the engineering section I am currently on. I try to get as much knowledge on the asset base that we control in each section in the 3 to 6 months we spend on each engineering section around Gatwick and hopefully impress the current technicians and managers enough to want to have me back at the end of the apprenticeship.
I have learnt many different skills in the time I have been in my apprenticeship some include: - Safe Electrical practices - Fault finding - Critical thinking - Working as a team - Building professional relationships These are some of the key (but not limited to) skills that I use day to day in my role at the airport.
I enjoy my apprenticeship beyond what I ever believed I would before starting. the knowledge and skills I am building is something that can set me up for the rest of my (hopefully) long career. I also learn skills like communication that extend far beyond just the workplace. The company sending us on a personal development course every year with my fellow apprentices really help with my confidence to lead a team and to also work well in a team lead by others. The outward bounds has also developed my love for pushing myself physically and explore out of my comfort zone.
Gatwick make sure to spend a lot of time and resources in organizing and optimizing the program so that we get the most out of the four years. As we spend 3 to 6 month on each Engineering section around the airport we are given our section plan in advance so we are always clear on where we are going next and also how long we spend with each section. we have frequent one to ones with our manager and mid year reviews and end of year reviews.
we receive a lot of support from our manager, he has been trained on NVQ assessing. whenever you have questions or troubles with a write up or organising your cross referencing he's is qualified to help and truly understands the ins and outs of the NVQ program. we also have support in issues at home or if we are feeling down through many different free channels like a helpline paid for by Gatwick
we have meetings with our college training provider once every 10 weeks or if you need to review some work he will come into the airport and review your work. east surrey college has recently dedicated a new member of staff which is always there and is quick to answer emails and closely works with our manager to improve communication methods
the NVQ gives you the base knowledge to get to understand and learn more about the specific equipment that you work on day to day. Gatwick then make sure to follow up this training by putting you on specific training courses that are more tailored toward the kit you are working on at the airport as it is normally more specialized then common electrical instillation can teach you.
there are plenty of team building days and chances to get involved in work sporting events. you can also donate time to charities Gatwick work close with to give you a better sense of giving back to the areas that surround the airport itself. we also go on a week long team bonding trip every year which brings us together as apprentices
