I am a senior support worker in a residential care home for people with learning disabilities. My daily duties are to ensure that people have quality life, supported enough for all aspects of their needs, support other staff to do their job, to ensure there are enough staff to support people.
I have learned a lot of new skills that are required in my position. I also developed many skills to. Some of the skills I learn are positive risk taking, creating risk assessments, creating support plans, reporting incidents, positive behaviour intervention. Skills I developed are, to communicate better, to manage my time better, manage people better.
I enjoyed my programs because it was very relevant to my everyday duties at my work. Although there were core units, I was also allowed to choose some units which I was interested which made it more interesting for me. There were also a lot of different learning options such as recording voices.
It was organised and structured throughout the course. I knew what I was required to do from the beginning of the course I was explained about the course and the information was given. However I was not explained enough about the end of course assessments and found the end point assessments very complicated.
I didn’t receive a lot of support from my employer. I was not given any extra time do my course work or any of my assessments outside my core work hours. I also didn’t feel like I was supported enough because many times there was nobody available for any questions
I was visited by my training provider about 12 times in total, around once a month basis which was more than enough however arranging the meetings has not always been easy because of my availability or the trainers availability. She also considered other students that are at my work place which made it more difficult.
It is very relevant to my role and it added a massive benefit into my cv. I will be able to focus on developing myself into new higher positions. I also feel more confident about my everyday duties at my role. I also feel more confident with my qualifications towards my employer as an employee.
Yes there are many activities. One of them is a new staff forum. I have been chosen as a chairman to the forum as a staff representative who is responsible to bring any staff issues into the board to resolve issues. It is an extra curricular activity. I am very happy to be chosen for this.
Yes
There are a lot of personal development opportunities. It is a big company and there are a lot of different positions at different levels that are always available. They treat their employees good. They always look for new developments. They make me feel professional. I feel as I am trusted and valued by them.
The advice I would give to others who would like to apply to this company is to take all opportunities in hand. Also always try and better yourself. Do not apply if you don’t have a caring attitude because the job nature is not for everyone. Treat people well. Keep professional.
