  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • A day in my life as an apprentice is quite hard to describe as no two days are the same. My days involve, problem solving, technical calculations, design, planning, meetings and communication to the project team as well as the client. Every day, I coordinate my project, develop notional solutions to the client’s business risks, while considering commercial aspects of the project and ensuring that my milestones are met.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In short yes! I have developed in confidence, presentation skills, communication and teamwork with the client and project team. I have learnt how to use different types of software, planning programmes and expand knowledge on existing programmes that I used.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really love what I do. The programme has been just the right level of work and learning. I love to see my designs and calculations come to life by seeing them being built. I have developed technically but I have opportunities to be able to grow in confidence by discussing options with the client and the project team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have clear defined goals that I review yearly with my line manager. There is always an opportunity for me to discuss with my line manager anything that I would like to work on. I have regular reviews about my project work and also how it ties into what I'm learning at colllege

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive continuous support from my employer at work and throughout my college work. Any issues that I have I feel confident discussing with my line manager. If I am struggling on a piece of work, I feel comfortable asking for help, as everyone is willing to help and teach me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel that I receive a lot of support from my training provider. They are quick and responsive to any of my queries. They are understanding if I have any issues with the work or deadlines and they also understand that as an apprentice we have lots of other work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • What I learn at college directly applies what I do at work on a daily basis. I find it consolidates my knowledge on the subjects and therefore completing assignments I find is easier as it's writing an assignment because its what I do everyday.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes! So I am a part of the sports and social committee there are weekly sports activities to get involved in but we also try run a fun activity every month, this could be anything from a beer festival to go karting. There is always plenty going on in the office.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a great company to work for, with amazing opportunities for all levels of staff. I have really enjoyed working for Mott MacDonald and feel that I have developed a lot more with their continuous support throughout my apprenticeship. They are an understanding employer and adapt to your needs and requirements.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • The main thing is to be yourself. Ensure that you really are passionate and want the job that you are applying for. Make sure that you know what you have included on your CV and can talk about it with ease. It maybe good to investigate the company and understand their key values.
