My role as a Civil Engineer includes a mix of tasks such as developing CAD drawings to a specified level, complying with specified standards and filling out CDM forms to aid with the Safety and planning element of Schemes. I work for Kier Highways and the work I undertake has to be of my best ability to ensure schemes run smoothly and I aid the work of my colleagues.
In my role, I have learnt many skills and improved on existing ones greatly. Firstly I have learnt new skills such as how to use AutoCAD and other programmes. Also, personal skills such as organisation and presentation of work have been improved to meet with standards set by the company and by British standards.
I have Enjoyed my programme thoroughly, however, I have encountered many issues with the Training provider. LSP has provided a very disorganised programme and the Level 3 course began poorly. After various complaints and pushing from the company, the plan of the whole course was corrected and overall is back on track.
As stated in my previous answer. LSP's organization at the beginning of the course was woeful, however, after many complaints from the company and the apprentices, this was eventually fixed. As for the company, they have provided a very well organized and supported the programme with incredible opportunities for all of the apprentices.
KIER as an employer has been hugely supportive of myself and all other apprentices I have spoken to. they have provided me with above grade training and various opportunities to improve/better my skills. Also, managers and other employees have helped wherever possible to give guidance towards the NVQ and supported our needs well.
LSP has only recently begun to give the help and training required to complete the course. In the initial year of working with LSP, we had 13 different tutors all providing us all with their version of how to complete the course, None of which gave us the information nor guidance to fill out work packs or tackle the tasks at hand.
The information and traning gained from LSP (since improving) have helped and gave us a basic understanding of some fundamental ideas and techniques used in the industry. The NVQ and diploma we have been studying has given us a very wide range of knowledge and has set the basis for becoming qualified engineers in any field within civil engineering.
Inside KIER there are many extra-curricular activities for us to take part in. Around once a month, some of the employees organize 6-aside games after work in the local area that you are able to take part in and other activities such as team bonding exercises have taken part in the past such as an escape room experience.
Yes
KIER is a very supportive and company with incredible opportunities for many people. throughout my apprenticeship, I have received many opportunities to improve my personal skills, professional attitude, and overall professionalism. Within KIER there are also many opportunities to move around and you are given responsibility and recognized for working hard.
When applying to KIER, I found best to be very proactive and to seek the right people to speak to when applying. Also, if your application is successful, make sure that you ask questions and listen to what people say to you on the application day. Working as a team is vital to ensure schemes and operations in the company run smoothly.
