I am involved in the allocations of the various maintenance jobs to the different departments within Kier Highways. I also work to plan in future jobs alongside a work planning team. Most of my work is carried out using the internet and various microsoft programmes. Another one of my tasks is to upload picture of completed jobs.
One of the main skills I have developed is my time management skills. At times during the day, I need to prioritise certain tasks in order to ensure that I utilise my time most effectively. Another skill that I have developed is my organisation skills. I have to be able to divide my time between my coursework and my day to day jobs in order to complete the apprenticeship.
I am really enjoying my programme as I am working in a friendly and relaxed work envrionment where I feel comfortable. I feel as if I am able to do my coursework while also carrying out my daily jobs properly. Also, the coursework isn't too heavy meaning it doesn't cause too much stress.
My programme is fairly structured and to some extent, I understand what I need to do in order to pass the apprenticeship. At the beginning of my apprenticeship, there was a bit of confusion as there wasn't much contact made regarding it, but now it is a lot more organised.
I recieve a lot of support from my employer as my manager is always checking that I am up to date with my coursework and my day to day tasks. My employer also encourages me to take more time if needed to complete any jobs that need to be completed.
As of yet, I haven't got too deep into my coursework and therefore haven't recieved that much support. However, my tutor is very supportive. I have regular meetings set up with my new tutor where I recieve support and explanation into how best to go about completing my apprenticeship.
My qualification involves me understanding how my role benefits the department that I am working in. This helps me to perform better because I know that when I'm working, all of my tasks are contributing to the success of the company. Also the qualification helps me to continue to work on my time management and organisation skills.
As of yet, there haven't been any extra curricular activities that I have gotten involved in. This is possibly due to me working in such a small team. However, there has been an apprenticeship trip that involved all of Kier's apprentices from all over the country. The trip was good because it allowed me to get to know a bigger group of apprentices.
Yes
I think Kier is a good business that really values it's young people and also their apprentices. Therefore I would encourage my friends to join Kier group because I would like to see us all working for a business as big and really well recognised as the Kier group.
I would encourage others applying to Kier group to be confident in your application and put yourself out in the best light possible. I would say to present a professional looking CV and come across as mature and ready to work despite how young you are and to also be willing to be friendly and approachable.
