  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot about building works during my degree, especially in house building. I have also gained a good grasp of chartership options such as RICs and the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors. The degree has also provided me with the ability to confidently write essay work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my course as a whole with minor areas which i did not enjoy. The main aspect for me was to do this course with people within my company and industry who are like-minded individuals. Sadly, I stopped at the foundation degree stage and didnt carry on for the top up. This was due to external pressures such as childcare at home.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course was very well organised mainly due to the staff employed to take care of the students. Kay was fantastic help to all us students. It was also very well structured as we would spend 4 weeks a year in sheffield whilst completing assignments at home. It was very well put together.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Sheffield Hallam and all its staff have been incredibily helpful and understanding. At one point I was able to speak to a member of staff outside of working hours in regards to a problem I was having with one of his assignments. He responded in a proffessional and kind manner.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel it has given me a broader sense of the Quantity Surveying "world", learning some older techniques whilst also showing the future technologies that could revolutionise out industry. I also think the information provided on chartership has been extremeley helpful in preparing me for becoming chartered myself. Overall, it was helped me become a better QS.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Their used to be quite a lot of social activities including 5 a side football and lunchs out. Unfortunetely, due to the reshaping of Kier, a lot of members of staff have either moved due to the uncertainty or moved by the company so extra curricular activities are now limited.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • When I first joined Kier, I was answering phones in a control centre. Kier try to develop their staff by providing them with opportunites and encouragement. If I had not joined Kier, I would not be in the career of Quantity Surveying but a less skilled job instead. Kier has given me the opportunity to improve myself and my livelyhood so I'm very grateful they are my employer.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
  • I would tell an individual to try and go above and beyond if possible as people will notice and try and help whenever necessarry. I would also tell people to try and have set goals that you could achieve and if successful, try and tell management what you want in your career as they will try to help to ensure these goals are met.
