My role changes on a daily basis as i work with different people within the design team assisting on different types of schemes. my main role involves using AutoCAD to design drawings. i also help do some of the documentation for projects such as the health and safety documents for schemes.
I have learnt a lot since i started. the main skill i have developed is my AutoCAD design skills which i had very little experience with prior to my start at KIER. i have also developed my collaboration skills as i often work within a team to complete a piece of work
i like how i don't do the same job every single day, this provides me with a more enjoyable job because it means work doesn't become repetitive, i also enjoy carrying AutoCAD work which is a major part of my job role so for these reason i enjoy my job a lot.
I have a clear structure on how my apprenticeship will progress over the two years with me moving around in to different teams to get a full experience of all the roles. I also have a college structure which gives me 2 years to complete the course however the course doesn't seem well organised as in 10 weeks of attending college tutor sessions we haven't covered a lot of content.
I receive a lot of support from other people in my office and have been assigned a mentor who i can ask questions if i ever feel the need. the company also has mental health advisers who you can go to if you ever have any problems you need to talk about, even if it isn't related to work
The training provider hasn't been great since my start, mainly due to us not having a consistent tutor since the start of the course. Also, the tutors we have had have been poor, this is since we waste most of our college day traveling for the course and re-capping what we did the previous week.
i have used the content i learnt at college in a very limited way. this is because the content we have learnt at college doesn't directly apply to my current role within the company. this is because the course mainly focuses on building rather than highways which is the sector i am working in.
I haven't taken part in many extra-curricular activity's since starting my job at Kier and i haven't heard about many activity's since i started that i could take part in. the only activity i have taken part in is the Christmas social party that we had over Christmas
Yes
The company had been excellent for me since i started. i enjoy the work i have been given to do and enjoy the company of the other employees in the office who are all friendly and approachable. the wages we are given are also very competitive for the highways design industry
the most important thing to consider when applying for a kier group role is to make sure that you work well in a team this is because this is a key part of working within kier as the company encourage collaboration between employees to increase productivity of all employees in the work place
