As an apprentice civil engineer, my role involves helping out on various schemes to pick up as many skills as possible. This includes working on different types of schemes in order to expand my ability to be involved in a large variety of schemes. The role also involves being in education once a week to be able to gain the necessary qualification so that I can move on to the graduate scheme once I have achieved the level 3 qualification.
I have learn many new skills such as; being able to understand the different types of materials used in pavements, understand the types of defects and how they are caused, how to fill out the different types of documentation that is used for schemes, and also the use of new software that is important in this field of work, such as A.V.I.S. I have developed my skills in CAD by using it as often as possible and trying to improve with the software.
I am thoroughly enjoying the apprenticeship. Being involved with different aspects of different types of schemes excites me for the future as it allows me to pick up key skills for this field of work. Being able to understand what is needed for the different types of schemes allows me to play a role in decisions that I would not have expected to be able to do so soon into my apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship is well structured as there are clear plans and expectations of us, whether that is working on schemes or whether that is the college work that we do when we are working towards the level 3 qualification. There are clear plans of what we are expected to achieve in the 2 years of this current apprenticeship.
I receive plenty of support from the employer with the college and also the general day to day works. The company allows us to have some control over our timings as long as we can stick to a deadline. This is also shown when I am given the space to work on the schemes and also be/feel supported by the company.
The college side of things shows clearly how the training provider supports us and is allowing us to have some space and freedom when it comes to the times in which we can get work done. The support I receive allows me to achieve the best results possible with my work.
I feel like the training provider teaches me key aspects that are linked to my current role. This allows me to have more of an understanding when it comes to working on schemes outside of college and be able to achieve better results from my college work and general day to day work.
There are just a few extra curricular activities that people can get involved in, however, I understand that most are organised by individuals or teams themselves, and aren't provided by the company directly. There are opportunities to go to events related to my role if both I and other members of the team agree that it would be beneficial to go to such events.
Yes
I would recommend Kier Group because Kier Group allows their employees to explore their roles and gives opportunities to anyone who is willing to learn and work hard to achieve the best possible results. It is a supportive company that makes each employee feel valued and be a part of decisions to do with their role.
The advice that I would give to others applying to Kier Group is to understand that any role that you apply for will require you to able to focus and work hard. It is a great opportunity and will allow you to pick up many new skills and improve sills you already have. The company gives their full support to anyone who is willing to try and improve every day.
