Assisting line managers with schemes and taking responsibility for my own schemes including maintenance and value management schemes. Managing my own time to ensure i can complete the work i am given in a timely fashion and when necessary present my work in a meeting with the client such as Highways England.
Yes, such as using autocad and other programmes such as AVIS, roadshow, civil 3D. I have learned how to complete a value management scheme from start to finish which has improved my timekeeping and presentation skills whilst also improving my communication skills by working as part of a team in the office.
I enjoy the programme but the lack of time with lecturers at the university block weeks is a concern, we only have around 20 hours per trimester and are expected to learn whole modules in preparation for an exam without having being taught the module. I enjoy working in the Kier office environment.
The programme is well structured in the way of hotel bookings and travel arrangements from the office to the university but as mentuioned previously i think it would be beneficial to have more time with the tutors so they are able to better teach us on the relevant modules, for example i have a hydraulics exam in april and currently have had only a 2 hour lecture on hydraulics having never done it before and will be expected to pass a 2 hour exam in april having had no more lectures.
Employers are very supportive, particularly my line manager, and other people in the office who have recently graduated are very helpful in assisting me whenever i have any queries and helping me know what i can expect from a degree course. Overall Kier are very supportive of me being on the degree apprenticeship.
I am only around 3 months in to the second year at the moment, for my first moduel, civil law and legislation my tutor gave me lots of support and was quite active is responding to emails and giving feedback on draft work however with the most recent modules there has been no support or guidance.
I feel the modules i have studied so far on my course will have little effect on my daY TO day role as they aren't quite relevant to my job role however looking at the syllabus i am sure the modules will be beneficial to my day to day work.
Yes, we play 5 a side football and also sometimes play badminton, there are also social events such as birthdays and christmas where people will go out after work for drinks or food and get to know people from the office and teams they wouldnt usually engage with a little better.
Yes
Kier are a good company to work for and are supportive to all their staff. in 5+ years working for Kier Group i have made some great friends and very good working relationships. The office environment is a great and happy place to work and everybody communicates well with each other.
Have a positive and pro-active outlook. Try to ensure that rather than panicking when something goes wrong just take a step back to assess the situation and decide calmly on the best course of action. i have panicked in the past after making a mistake and it doesnt serve to help.
