  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • This changes every few months, as a year 1 apprentice I am given a few months in one team and then I move to another, this helps with getting to know everyone but also gives me a good overview of what each team does. Overall this helps me decide what team I want to go into at the start of year 2.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a lot about telecoms since beginning here in September 2019, there are lots of opportunities to go on courses and I expect there will be more. So far I have learnt about the front desk experience - Telephony Support, Site Access etc. I have just moved into the "Ethernet" team which confgures services for business customers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It's earn while you learn style education, definitely one of the better options for those who decide against university like me. I enjoy it about as much as anyone enjoys work, it's more the people that make the experience better. It doesn't feel like an intense corporate production line, it feels like an enjoyable place to be to earn a good wage and make some smashing mates.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I recieve monthly meetings with my mentor from GKA, it alternates between a phone call and face to face reviews. Only 20% of my working week has to be spent on study but I find it easier to spend a day getting the criteria met. A welll structured apprenticeship in my opinion.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Second to none in this regard, no other business that I have worked for has actually cared about the personal predicaments of it's employees, or been so willing to provide support for everyone. Great managers, excellent mentor or "Workplace Mum" as I call her :). I am well looked after and on the job training from all parties is exceptional.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Usually my training courses are provided through SSE so I can't really give much insight into GKA as of yet. There are several online courses that I have access to through GKA as well as face to face stuff though. Support is readily available if I need it but I can always just ask colleagues for help with things too!

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Because I can choose what I get trained on I can target what courses I need to do. This is definitely a performance booster. I recently went on a two day course about Introduction to telecoms and found that MPLS routing is also a large part of my job role in this team. This training I have directly applied to work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are these opportunities available, I sometimes spend my lunch hour playing table tennis with one of the guys from my last team. We had the standard christmas do not so long ago as well. There are reduced cost memberships for the on site gym as well. All in all, not a bad experience for extra-curriculars.

  • 9a. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because, for the reasons stated above, this is without a doubt the best place of work I have had the pleasure of being employed at. SSE Enterprise Telecoms has it down to a tee when it comes to flexible working, mental health support and extra curriculars. SSE ET invests in you as an individual.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • Come to your interview prepared and make sure you make it clear that the things you don't know you are eager and prepared to learn. Be as confident and charismatic as you can. Think hard about the application tests and put the effort in, You will be rewarded well.
