  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work on small projects that are given to me by my placement manager, coordinating activities with other members of staff including senior leaders. This could involve creating a project plan and organising a meeting, or assisting managers with the creation and implementation of their plans.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a wide range of new skills such as refining my written communication and developing my ability to present to a group of people. This has helped to boost my confidence a lot and increased my appreciation of what it takes to become a successful leader.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The variety that it offers is unparalleled. There is a great supportive culture at TfL and they truly value the input of apprentices. Through the ability to do different placements every 6-months, there is always an opportunity to learn new things and try something you may not have imagined you would be doing.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a clear structure and I have regular meetings with my placement manager and sponsor. The apprenticeship scheme is explained well to managers so that they understand our requirements (for example 20% off-the job training) and this helps them to support us with both work and study.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from a range of different people, including my sponsor, placement manager and other apprentices. There is a focus on ensuring that apprentices have enough work and we are always supported in any extra activities or opportunities we take up.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As we only visit Pearson once a week, there is a limited amount of time to learn the content and most is done via online lectures. There is support available for example through quarterly reviews, but it is less structured than TfL.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There are some links between the two however it depends heavily on the specific placement. Not all content is applicable to the work that I do and I don't feel that it immediately adds. It is good however to get a wider understanding of business theories and practices.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of opportunities for volunteering and attending social events. These can be TfL-wide or in the specific teams you are in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The supportive culture and opportunity to do meaningful work alongside gaining a degree and management chartership is what makes this apprenticeship so great.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Read up on the Mayor's Transport Strategy and a bit of background about the business too. Also, look at the five key behaviours and think about how you can demonstrate that you fit into the organisation.
