My job title is an apprentice Civil engineer, my daily task consist of working with a sub-contractor and making sure that they start work on time and solve any problems they may have regarding the task. I have to do lots of seeting out which envolves reading complicated drawings and producing them out on site. I am currently in charge of a sub-contractor called D-Drill which i have to look after and produce a quality file ready for the audits that are carried out on site.
i have been on many courses since starting at costain some of which are 1) Confined space 2) First Aid 3) Manual handling These are just some of the courses i have been on and i believe courses are vital for personal development
I enjoy my course but sometimes is does get intense with the long hours on site and the amount of college work that has been given to us, i do believe we could be given more support at work for our academic studies.
you dont get much appreciation from managment, i do sometimes feel that people forget that we are here to learn and just expect us to get on with tasks that havent been explained or shown to us. Some people also talk down to the apprentices as they dont believe that they are capable because of their role
Our college course isnt very organised and we havent been given dates on when our course will finish
we dont recieve much support from our training provider regarding our course. our NVQ assesors are very good though
At work people dont really care about our college course, and only worry about getting the days to day tasks completed
I feel that my salary could be higher due to the amount of work and responsibility i have on site. A posotive of costain is that they pay your travel which does compensate for the lower salary
Costain do a monthly social where you can go out with your team members and relax in a chilled enironment
Yes
because it is a great company to work for with great plans for the future
Make sure you are willing to work long hours and work very hard with the apprenticeship
