  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Apprentice QS, helping complete commercial roles in construction projects. Usual day to day tasks include assessing and negotiating Bills of Quantities, discussions with Project Managers, understanding contracts and understanding detailed construction drawings. Responsible for ensuring value for work is met for the business and the public, working on mainly surface projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As part of my apprenticeship I have to achieve competencies, and these competencies are a set of skills that demonstrate competency in the skill of quantity surveying. They include quantification, contract management and tendering. I have developed many soft skills during my time, such as confidence and man management skills as well building new soft skills such as negotiating

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying my degree apprenticeship at Transport for London, and enjoying the work and study aspect of the programme. Learning at university is helping my learning at work, and it is fun to see where the two can inter connect. I have enjoyed being given responsibilities at work, and it is fun to see my work have an end product.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured and organised in a way that allows you to achieve the end term goal of the apprenticeship programme whilst also setting you up for achieving after the programme finishes. The way it is set up in 6 month and 1 year placement is perfect for exposure to lots of things.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provides higher education training, and facilities that I need to achieve what I want from this programme. Transport for London also provides managers in roles relevant to my course that can help and guide me through the apprenticeship, there is a wealth of experience for me to feed off.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university provides coursework, assignments and exams to measure how we are getting on in the qualifications, whilst provide a depth of resources such as online library, subscriptions, libraries and personal tutors to help you achieve the highest grades in these measures. London South Bank University does provide a good support system to help succeed

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The knowledge I am building in my qualification is necessary for my day to day role, as it has provided me a basic understanding of construction and contracts. These are fundamentals to my day to day role, and I am able to build on what I learn at work which is good

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Transport for London has a football league - London Underground League - which is an 11 a side, two tier league system and this has allowed me to join a football team and play bi-weekly, interacting with people in the business I normally never would. I am glad I am part of this football set up

  • Yes

  • Transport for London provides you with a range of benefits for a programme like this such as; a good work life balance, an opportunity to a degree, an opportunity to gain experience and other good financial benefits such as travel and pension schemes, as well as providing a good career starting block


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Be confident, be brave and be assured in your abilities - Transport for London will give you all the platforms to succeed you just have to make sure you're willing to launch yourself from these platforms and achieve what the programme can allow you to achieve. It has been a great 2 years so far
