  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently a technical support apprentice on my second placement within the business. This involves training and learning the various skills that are required within the department. I began my first year through training on various engineering activities. This involved, using computer numerical controlled machines to using computer aided design on the desktops.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have definitely learnt and developed many new skills. The main skill that I have developed is confidence and communication skills. This has been developed through the completion of various activities such as delivering presentations. Other skills that I have learnt and developed involve, team working, time management, organisational skills and also leaderships skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy this programme a lot! It brings many exciting opportunities and also new experiences. The support provided is excellent and the training provided is of high quality. I enjoy the activities and work given as they are challenging but fun. The programme offers many extra-curricular activities and do a lot of charity work. This is fun to get involved in as you meet new people and complete fun tasks and also help the community.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured as you are slowly brought into the business via a first year of training at a great facility. This is good for those who do not have much experience within the engineering industry. I find that the structure is organised and well planned as they allow you to develop your skills and qualities. it also allows you to complete necessary criteria required for your qualification.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer and this is implemented in various manners. My employer accounts for various support such as health and wellbeing as well as work and study support. There are drop in sessions which often allow for any queries or concerns to be answered and also a website which the company provides to provide you with financial advise and support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a substantial amount of support from our training provider when working towards our qualifications. I am assigned an assessor who gives me direct support and advise in terms of what needs to be complete in order to achieve my qualification. They also mark our work and give us feedback on any areas that we may need to improve on. Any further support I would require can be requested via the assessor who will then try and provide me with it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the qualification allows me to develop competence within my role. It provides me with the right knowledge, attitudes, training, experience and skill that I require to perform the job role well. Therefore, I am able to perform better and more effectively within my role. The qualification is also related to engineering which is the field my role is directly involved with.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities to be getting involved with. It is encouraged to do so. Some of these activities are getting involved with STEM and hosting STEM workshops to various age groups. You can also take part in the Prince's Trust as well as other small activities such as open events/evenings.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an international company that provides many opportunities and experiences. It allows you to develop your skills and qualities and provides you with a strong foundation for your career path. There is a lot to get involved with and various roles you can experience throughout your time at BAE.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I would encourage others to express their interest and also do a bit of research in the company and what opportunities they can provide.
