I am currently completing a level 2 NVQ PEO (performing engineering operations) in the SDC (skills development centre). I am completing units on Bench Fitting, Maintenance and electronics. Whilst in the SDC I am completing knowledge questions for the Level 2 NVQ whilst performing practical work and participation in other competitions and further work. I attend Fareham college (CEMAST) one day a week to complete a Level 4 HNC in Mechanical Engineering.
I have both learnt new skills and developed existing skills whilst in the SDC (skills development centre). Having completed a Level 3 CTEC prior to coming to BAE Systems I already had a basic understanding of many processes from theory and practical work in college and at home. The SDC is very good at developing skill and can cater for all skill levels offering further work once you have completed previous work to the required standard.
I think that the programme is very enjoyable and completing the Level 2 PEO will be a great basis to work from as all higher apprentices have varying levels of engineering experience and knowledge. Furthermore, lots of the Level 2 PEO work can be transferred to the Level 4 HNC work and just needs to be built upon by CEMAST.
Our Programme is well organised/structured giving a good balance between classroom and practical work. All of our units are well planned and cover all of the theory needed to complete the knowledge questions and paperwork. BAE Systems also have lots of contact with CEMAST to ensure that we progress well with our Level 4 qualifications.
We receive a lot of support within the SDC (skills development centre) and the business. Whilst in the SDC all of the instructors and staff give support in regards to work related issues and personal issues in addition to safeguarding and wellbeing officers. We also receive frequent emails regarding personal heath and wellbeing.
There is a lot of support available regarding to working towards qualifications. Whilst in the SDC (skills development centre) all of the instructors are there to provide helpful advice and instruct on practical and theory work. Whilst at CEMAST the lectures are very helpful and give you everything you need to complete your learning.
I think that completing the Level 2 NVQ PEO will help to give engineering knowledge and basic skills for the future if they are needed. The in-house training such as working at heights also allows me to complete work when in placements. Furthermore completing a HNC in mechanical engineering gives a more in depth knowledge in to specialist subjects.
There are many activities to get involved with including going on outward bounds with the outward bound trust. This is a week long activity course that develops teamwork and other skills to help in the work environment. There are also other events that you can be involved in such as stem days and helping run challenges in schools.
Yes
BAE Systems is a great company to work for with a very good apprentice salary and lots of support to progress within the company. BAE also offers many job opportunities within the company and allows employees to gain extra qualifications such as progressing from a HNC to a HND and then to possibly a degree.
I would say to think about your application and take extra time to make sure everything is truthful and spelling and grammar checked. I would also recommend showing an interest in the company and attend open evenings and any events that are running. Furthermore you should ensure you are yourself throughout the process.
