Most days I'm at depot working along side the joiners that have already passed the apprenticeship. The best bit about the job is that you are getting paid for the learning experience. However, the college experience could be better. Although once there, it is very enjoyable. I live 3 hours away from the college, and having to travel that on a Monday and Friday in my own car is annoying and quite expensive. overall i think thew apprenticeship is good, but could be more flexible to suit different peoples needs
Yes. Obviously i have learnt how to join all cable up to 1000 volts live and up to 11KV dead. But along side what my routine job in tales, I've learnt a lot about team work and great work experience in general. Also whilst at college we learnt some high rope skills and mountain biking skills.
I enjoy the program a lot due to the freedom of the work load. By that I mean you are left to get on with the 'skill sure' (online portfolio) by yourself, with sessions that if you need help you can go to. This means you can get it done as fast as you like, and as long as you hit your deadlines, you're left top your own devises.
I wouldn't say the organisation is great due to travel to and from depot and college and training could be better. This is due to some people being aloud company vans to do the journey, and some people not. I feel like that could be a blanket rule for everyone to follow.
Support; support is excellent.; if you ever need a hand getting evidence wrote up for the online portfolio, then the help is there for you. It can be a struggle getting on the right jobs, but getting to know the team and doing favours for a favour can help out getting the evidence you need.
Towards the qualification, the college pretty much leaves us to our own devises. But if you need it, there is support lessons scheduled into our timetables. As for the rest of the apprenticeship, SSE try and support you though out the course, and i feel if you ever need any help with work that goes towards our qualification, it is there for you.
i think the qualification is very loosely related to our job role. At college it would seem that we do a lot of Math and calculations that we wouldn't use out on site. However i do understand that the qualification cant be tailored to each apprenticeship course there is.
At college we have done high ropes, mountain biking and archery. however at work there are no extra curricular activities that we can get involved with really. But it think that's to do with the type of work we do as there is a lot of out of normal working hours work that we do.
Yes
I would recommend SSE to a friend because its a good place to work where you treated with respect while working along side others. They invest a lot into there work force and you can tell that they look after all their staff. They also have the best pay as an apprentice in comparison to other companies
Be yourself. No matter what anyone says or does just be yourself, and if something dosent look right, or you dont feel safe, then dont do it. In this industry you must always feel safe in what you do. However, i would suggest looking for other companys that are closer to them in as much as the college.
