  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • on a day to day basis at the depot I often go out to various sites and areas with trained cable jointers and jointing cables on the electrical network. This is done live as it means that we will not be taking customers off the electrical network keeping the meters running.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my hand skills since joining the company and have managed to develop my planing and communication skills. I have also learned how to work with live electricity while doing my day to day work, the ways that this is done is by ensuring that only one conductor is exposed at a time and using appropriate insulation.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The extent at which I enjoy my apprenticeship program is that i enjoy the chances i am given and also the ability to work at a different place nearly everyday, I get to work with more and various trained people who help me learn and guide my learning/training in the appropriate areas.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of my overall apprenticeship program at the beginning of my course was not very well structures. the reason for this was because the organisation was in between college contracts so we did not really get the desired training. while now it has improved drastically and not the teaching is sufficient.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The amount of support that we as apprentices receive is some what sufficient, the overall organisation pf the courses can be finicky, the in house training is organised quite well with experienced trainers. while the communication could use some work, they do not always tell us until the day before we have a course.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The amount of support that we as apprentices receive is good. the overall organisation of the college courses has been turbulent, the in house training is organised quite well with experienced trainers. while the college started off by changing course providers but now the provider will offer as much help as they possibly can, if we need more time then they will arrange additional lessons.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the college qualification provided to us is good for general knowledge but does not offer too much in the way of helping us preform better at our designated job roles. while the in house training is fully aimed and tailored towards our specific job roles. Which is very useful so we know what/how we will preform on site.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a range of extra curricular activities offered to the entire work force, the list of activities contains and is not limited to, football between the regions and depots, charity days where you go and support a fund raisers for a chosen charity (of your choice). the also have various other activities to do with team building.

  • 9a. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because its overall pay is quite good, higher than some other apprenticeships, and that it is a brilliant place to get your hand skills trained and also learn a dedicated trade, the company is quite friendly swell, so it is not a drag to go to work every day l.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • That if you are intending to apply for sse you should first do some research into the different job roles at sse and what each job does. and they should also research to see if there is anywhere closer to them that will offer the same job roles and opportunities as sse.
