  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Starting from buddying an approved electrician to wiring and fitting out rooms/buildings yourself under supervision. Conduit systems, trunking systems, cable tray. Wiring panels. My role can be very demanding and I often have to be finished on time which is good and allows me to set goals through the day. Sometimes goals aren’t always met but this doesn’t matter as everything must be done safely and some things often prevent you from starting your task if it is unsafe.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt a lot of skills regarding quick and effective ways to do things in relation to wiring circuits, installing different equipment and making things look nice to the eye. Precision, confidence and responsibility would be the main three. There’s many other skills learned I’ve not mentioned and they will be different for everyone but for me that’s some personal traits I’ve gained on.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My days can be varied. Sometimes we are very busy and brushed off our feet which motivates you to keep working hard and other days watching the clock tick by until we are authorised to do tasks. Depending on the situation/location etc. The college side of my programme was great and I have managed to take away a lot from that.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Organisation is very good. Throughout the programme I’ve always known what the next step ahead is. Structure is good and I’ve been given good opportunities for learning. Hopefully in the future I still have the chance for extra learning. The programme has ensured I am on the right path to success.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is always there. Apprentice coordinators from the company have done a very good job at staying in touch and only a phone call away if you need them. Always happy to help. Regular visits from the coordinator were always arranged in advance and would allow my coordinator to ensure I was happy and if I had an issues I could take them up with him.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Training provider at Perth college UHI and Sectt have done an okay job. The college we’re brilliant and happy to offer any help in areas you need, the lecturers were friendly and always there, but I did not here much from sectt apart from when at college which is maybe something to be improved on.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Some things I’ve learnt at college I am yet to do in my working day but I’m sure one day I will be doing them. Other things I have learnt I do every day. On the whole I feel it helps a lot. Many of things I have done are helpful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • From what I know of there are some extra curricular activities but I’m not sure to what extent. Within my office I’ve never really heard of any extra corricular activities on the regular basis but there’s certainly team building exercises that go on and I’m sure they would be happy to involve anyone.

  • 9a. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are an extremely happy company, and motivate employees to strive for greatness. They are always there if you need them and the information is the click of a button away. There are countless benefit schemes on board with Sse such as discounts for hundreds of things and also great work packages. Through the Sse app everyone is engaged with directors and for me personally I see this as a great way to involve employees at the bottom of the chain with employees at the top so they can hear your thoughts.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • Be yourself. Don’t worry if you’re not sure on what you want to do in 10 years time as I’m sure you will find a career within the company that you love, The support is there for you to do so. Make sure you agree with the company policies and 5 golden rules. Follow rules set in place and never work unsafely.
