I create/design sheets and drawings which include the electrical services on mainly commercial buildings. I carry out calculations that support the drawings. I also attend college once a week where I study a level 3 building services course. I also carry out mark ups that are given to me by senior members.
Ive developed and learnt how to use the software Revit, Autocad, Dialux and many other platforms which are needed to create a stage approval package. In addition the amount of technical information that is learnt everyday is very helpful alongside college and university. I have learnt how the company operates as well as how the work is complete.
I enjoy my team, the company and the programme as a whole. It works well, but can be easily fit into a 2 year period instead of the 3 contractually. I enjoy how the work varies from day to day and you are given time to learn more to support every day work.
It needs work. The college course is 2 years long, and the NVQ can be complete within the 2 years also. However you cant attend university without approval from director level. I believe the amount you learn is depending on which team you are placed in. If you are pushed within everyday work you are always learning.
You receive endless support from staff within my company. From asking a quick question on how to complete a given task within the software being used or if you are in need of a sit down and have a larger conversation til you understand a complex task. You also have the opportunity to have additional learning through lunch times in CPD's.
I receive a little bit of support from my training officer as I feel they are very rushed and pressed for time when I need to see them. I can present work and have feedback given after a month or so but it all depends on how busy they are.
I do not think the NVQ is helpful at all for my apprenticeship If anything it over complicates the job you have. The units are not all necessary to what you have to do. Its more of a tick in the box so that you receive your apprenticeship in the end.
There is a sports and social within my company who organise events throughout the year that any one can attend. there are CPD's, technical meetings and a buildings live event which you can also take part in to understand what the wider office is working on. There is also a football team that play weekly.
Yes
I would recommend Arup to my friend as the apprenticeship programme gives you endless support from other employees within work. Its a great company to work with that has an extremely high reputation that will help you to progress further on in your career. Staff are fun and friendly and the varied work keeps you engaged,
One tip I would recommend anyone who is to apply for an apprentiship within Arup is to research before you attend the meeting and be very well prepared for what the interviewers may throw at you. Be confident and honest. Show interest and always have questions to ask as it shows curiosity and interest.
