  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • 3D drawing, BIM Model Management, getting mark ups and design plans from engineers to populate a model. Liaising with engineers about design issues and deadlines within the project Using new software and complete design reviews alongside senior staff. Liaising with colleagues across not just Arup Belfast, but Cardiff & Bristol offices about best practice, career advice and training.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt about programming, automation, digital tools and workflows as well as developing my own tools for Revit to assist my team locally and across the UK. Using skills developed from training given by internal staff and external CPD qualified trainers about Revit, Dynamo and other software packages I have learnt an incredible amount in 18 months. There is also constant help from the entire team in Arup, my local manager and other people in my specific field across the UK.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the programme I am on. Studying one day per week, while working the other four allows me to gain valuable knowledge from industry, that I can carry across to my college work. This will be especially true in the coming HNC to study Building Services. Everyone is always ready to help with any personal or professional.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There are yearly personal appraisals giving a written record about my development, these give a well developed programme with a clear indication of which course I will study next, in regards to my upcoming HNC, but they also give a clear path of professional development, working towards an EngTech with CIBSE at the end of Level 3. There is constant support from my local manager and the wider BIM Team across Cardiff, Bristol & Arup UK.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is lots of support given to me daily by my line manager in regards to my day to day work, however there is also guidance and advice from the whole MEP & Buildings Team. There is also advice from others within the wider Arup BIM team, like those in Cardiff and Bristol, who I can contact about any further issues I'm having.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my local college has constant support to help me with assignments and ensure I am doing as well as I can. All the lecturers are happy to help with any issues I'm having and also give advice on what courses would suit my professional development. With this information I can inform my line manager and discuss my options openly.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • With the mechanical/manufacturing focus of my Level 3 course, there is an overlap of the content covered and that which I use in my day to day work. Using the content I learn in my course, I can develop a better understanding of the mechanical teams work and workflows.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of extra curricular events to get involved with in Arup, from local and regional football events and trips, golf events, multiple charity events and organisations each year to be a part of. We also have professional events from chartered bodies such as the ICE and CIBSE as well as talks and lectures about upcoming technologies within those industries.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Arup is a great place to work. There is constant personal and professional development with advice, training and staff who are always ready to help, or explain something in detail. With a professional guided path towards professional exams with Registered bodies, there is always room to grow and further develop yourself.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • Be honest and ensure you have a good understanding of the post you're applying for. Have a knowledge of the local projects they have worked on and the benefits they have brought to the area. Have a good idea of the career path within the industry you're applying.
