  • I have learnt and developed a large amount of skills during my time with Sisk that i believe will help me going forward with my career. • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I can honestly say I really enjoy working for Sisk, I know this because I have had previous jobs that I have unfortunately not enjoyed and things like 'Sunday night anxiety' or just dreading going to work in general have not applied once during my time here. I travel a minimum of 100 miles a day to and from work and I can honestly say I do not mind as I am enjoying my role and feel like a valuable member of the team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • While the educational side is very structured and organised, part of my job is working on a very busy construction site. Due to this, things do not always stick exactly to a structure but for the most part I can appreciate that as it will prepare me for things like that in the future. All in all, I am learning at a good rate.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has been fantastic. I have been allocated someone at almost every level in my role to learn from and shadow. This ranges from other apprentices who are a year ahead of me all the way to seniors. I also receive regular check ups from training coordinators to make sure my program is going well.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider has been fine and is open to helping support myself and my colleagues on the same course. They make sure we fully understand the material we need to complete our studies and NVQ qualification. We are looked after while we are at the college and at work if we have any issues.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification I am undertaking has been absolutely relevant to the works I do on site so far. Learning about something in a classroom setting to actually seeing it take place on site really helps you understand the process and I've personally had that occur many times during this apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are plenty of things to get involved with. As I work in construction it has a very social atmosphere and the teams like to get together for social occasions. There is a football team that I have been offered to play for with my colleagues and things like roadshows take place which provide professional networking opportunities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend John Sisk & Sons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The values this company has really resonated with me in terms of both their goals towards sustainability, and how the company does not actually strive to be the number 1 building contractor in the UK. It just strives to do the best possible job on the right kind of job. Its focus on learning and development for new employees is also really refreshing.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to John Sisk & Sons?
  • If a professional career in construction is something you are striving for, then I would 100% recommend applying. The support, transparency of the company and working environment are all fantastic and I believe like myself, you would really enjoy the opportunity. The standards are high but the return for your efforts doesn't go unnoticed.
