Role depends on which team one has been placed in as part of their scheme. Generally however, 2nd line support, working on IT tickets, working to resolve issues faced by users and completing requests made. Resolve Incidents not resolved at first point of contact due to the lengthy nature of the fix and, where requested, assist with the 2nd line support queue
Yes. Classroom-based learning helped me to learn the necessary and important theory required for me to do my job. Also, after doing a lot of work on testing and upgrading of new IT systems proposed for use within the organisation, I have learned how to use these systems with confidence.
Very much. Fellow colleagues were extremely helpful in my journey of learning and whilst working within the different teams I was placed in. Colleagues were also very understanding being an apprentice, and taught me concepts and technicalities in small steps without overburdening me with difficult learning straight away or big workloads.
The structure of the programme is good. I received a placement rotation schedule when joining and spent about 3 months within each team, which I thought was a suitable amount of time. Additionally, we were given the flexibility of extending or reducing the time we spent within each placement depending on how much we desired to continue or reduce the work we were involved there.
The employer ensured apprentices were assigned with a mentor. Regular meetings were set up to catch-up on our work and study progress. Additional to that, meeting with my placement manager were setup frequently to assess my progress with work and how my learning was progressing. All my colleagues and mentors around me ensured that they were always available to provide support for any issue I had.
Our training provider provided us with the necessary courses as well as extensive course notes prior to it. Our training provider also provided us with online video lessons on all topics relevant to our studies. Additionally, all of our tutors were easily accessible outside of classes and courses were very detailed.
The qualification that I have gained through my training provider has been very relevant to the work. It has given me the confidence in knowing that the work that I do as well as policies that I follow are in accordance to the suitable standards and rules that are required to be followed when using such systems and technologies.
Many different types of extra curricular activities have been set up for staff to get involved in. This includes activities at work and also outside of work. Lunch time sessions where staff get together to network and social, learn something new or even just have fun are available and easily accessible for anyone and everyone.
Yes
The values and company standards encourage you to enjoy life at work whilst also fulfilling our work duties. There are many colleagues who will be happy to go the extra mile to provide support to my development. There are many opportunities to better your career in terms of learning and opportunities.
My advice to anyone applying to Transport for London would be firstly to not hesitate or doubt about how positive such a move/change would be in their career. I would also say not to be fazed by the competitiveness of the available roles as TfL is a company that is very diverse and is willing to take on board anyone, so long as they are willing to put the effort to move the company forward and have passion in what they do.
