My role is Service Engineer Level 3 Apprentice. At the moment I am currently carrying out training to reach this level of competency. My day to day role includes going out on the shop floor with a competent person who shares their knowledge with me and will let me carry out the task with them.
I have learnt how to carry out a multitude of different tasks such as how to carry out maintenance on the Networker trains. I have also completed my PTS which means I am know competent to go out the track. I have also completed my NVQ level 2 which has helped me gain extra engineering skills.
I am greatly enjoying my programme as I am gaining new skills and knowledge while I am earning a good wage. I am also improving my skills that I already have, this includes my confidence, talking to other working professionals. I have also managed to take part in different events such as the first women only train.
I feel that my programme is well structured now due to the new competency test programme that has just been put into place so that I am qualified to a certain level by May. I have also gone through a rotation plan through different depots to ensure i have a better idea of what happens at different depots.
I receive good support from my company in my progression throughout my apprenticeship. They also aid me in any problems I have such as falling behind due to illness, training which takes time out of my BTEC progression. They also put measures in place to ensure that I can complete my apprenticeship.
I get a small amount of help from my training provider as I only receive minimal support and only see them face to face every three months. The only way of contacting them is through emails which aren’t always answered and not all work is marked with full feedback.
I don’t feel this helps as some of the NVQ level 3 work doesn’t fully relate to the job i am carrying out. I then also have to do separate competency tests with my company which i have also got to do through my training provider, which all the same and cannot be linked.
I have done a couple of extra curricular activities such as the first women only train. This train was run only by women and had groups of school girls looking to going into engineering jobs. At this event i got to talk to women in different roles in Southeastern and Network rail.
Yes
It is a good company with good pay. I have also gained lots of new skills and I am able to do different qualifications such as a degree and HNC/HND. Southeastern is a good company to work for as i have gained new skills and also improved my confidence.
Always be confident in what you say in the interview and do some research into the role and company. Also be open and honest about your previous experience and why you want to work for this company. I would also say to be open minded to if you will get the job or not
