I am a customer service delivery engineer who provides new telephone / internet lines as well as repairs faulty / damaged ones I maintain the copper network as Openreach progress into a new fibre network
Yes thanks to BT educational team (Emma Taylor) I have learned skills such as ICT level 1 which I never saw myself doing until I joined Openreach I am very thankful to learn a new skill on top of the job
Very much so I came from a retail job with no skills in telecommunications and I have learned everything in the Openreach network and also worked my hardest to finish my degree in telecommunications working closely with the teacher Fabian Ambrose who has guided me to get my project complete.
The apprenticeship programme is very organised we have a year and two days from when we join the company to complete the NVQ and are given 10 workshops to complete 14 units each unit varies in difficulty but with hard work / commitment it is possible to complete the apprenticeship with time to spare
I have a BT passport which lets my employer know about my learning difficulty (Aspergers) how it affects me and how they can adapt my work environment to a style which suits me best I have had great support from the apprenticeship team as well as my team on the tools
Honestly it all comes down to how much effort we ourselves put in the assessor (Fabian) can guide us in the right direction but only we can put the work in to make sure we get the apprenticeship scheme complete so if you put the work in you can do yourself a big favour
I feel like it reminds me of the things which a lot of engineers forget about correct PPE to wear and tools to use in certain scenarios as well as following quality standard guide lines to deliver the best possible service to our customers (service providers) as well as their customers (end users)
Yes when the work stack is down and enough people show interest my team manager mark Lindon arranges for us to go to social gatherings like bowling or panic room to thank us for the hard work we do in our day to day jobs the only bit which makes it hard is the team covers Tonbridge down to Hastings so a large patch
Yes
I came from a retail job which discriminated against me due to my learning difficulty and said to me that I would not go far in life Openreach opened my eyes and reminded me that I have a lot to give and put a lot of hard effort in to be the best person I can possibly be and I tell my friends that Openreach really can change your life for the better
Don’t be afraid to ask questions I come from a background where I never worked on wires, ladders or drills so asked as many questions as my brain could think and show interest / passion in what you want to do whether it’s working in copper or building the new future fibre network
